Whats the longest shot you've made with a pistol. I read stories in gun mag's and heard opinions on the matter but never tired anything further than 20yds or so. I think I'm going to get some trigger time tomorrow and see what I can do. Your thoughts?

I used to shoot at an old mine. I could get up on a cliff and shoot down at rocks surrounded by mud . I ranged it and it was between 110 to 130 yards. I got till I could hit rocks the size of softballs consistently with a 44 SRH. Then I took my Glock 21 and got fairly consistent with it. By having feedback from the surrounding mud I could walk my shots in . With the 45 I could shoot and see the impact a split second later. The only down fall was I wasted a lot of 45 brass off that cliff.

Just over 100 meters at a man sized steel plate with my cz phantom. It was my first time shooting it and I hit the plate 2 out of 5 times. Not impressive, but I was happy. I'm relatively new to pistols and hardly ever shoot past 20 yards with one.

We have pistol silhouette shoots out to 200 yards during the spring/summer. Some of the folks use .44 Mag revolvers. Most use thompson center encore pistols. I've shot with them from time to time, but those guys are GOOD at what they do. It's humbling!

If you're going to shoot shilouette with a revolver, bring an oven mit or piece of leather for your leg. Don't ask me how I know. ;) (Google Creedmore Position.)

My cousin and I shoot our .22's at 75 yards and at silver dollar size shoot n see's. It is always a fun time, he has the Ruger Mk II and I have the Browning Buck Mark and he buys me a lot of lunches. :)

I practice off hand longer shots at least weekly. I can hit a 1/5 scale ram silhoutte at 100 yards regularly with an open sighted 10" Ruger MK II.

100 yards.

In LE academy, after qualifying, they had us shoot two magazines at 100 yards.
Some instructions on how it's extremely rare to shoot at this distance, but there may be an incident where you may have to engage at that range (reference North Hollywood bank robbery shoot out). So, they had us shoot two magazines, in order for us to get some experience at it and so we can determine for ourselves if we are confident at engaging a suspect at that range.
After we scored out targets, they explained that one of the reasons we have ARs in patrol cars is because rifles are more accurate than pistols beyond 25 yards and to try and transition to the AR, if we expect to engage a suspect at distance. Because every time we miss it's a possible civilian bystander being hit down range. So, alway try and use the more accurate firearm for the situation.

Haven't tried a lot of long range work with a handgun, but I can hit a milk jug at 60 yds as often as not with my .45 Blackhawk. That's pushing it for me.

Quiet, I understand that there may be a possible scenario where you might have no choice but to shoot a threat at 100 yards, but any logical person in the litigation field will chew you and your department a new one if you engage a threat at 100 yards with a pistol, period. Your department should really take into consideration that aspect taught to police recruits. My department would NEVER, repeat NEVER teach any officer or recruit ANY pistol shooting at any distance past 50 yards. Things like that are reserved for patrol rifle and shotgun courses. For competition and leisure purposes, sure, shooting at those distances are fine, but for self defense and preservation of life, the shooting of non-competition/race gun pistols at those extreme distances is poor judgement.

As for me, the furthest distance I've attempted to shoot at with a pistol is 50 yards. I didn't really do that great of a job, because I was using stock sights. Anything past 50 yards and I need something bigger to reach out and touch em.

150 yards.
But to be honest my friend and I were screwing around and it was just PURE DUMB LUCK that I actually hit (winged) the target.

125yrds shooting at a running "Winged object" with a Ruger 22/45. Had my elevation and leed corrected by the 5th shot or so!:)

Not a long shot but a good one.

I shot a 99 out of 100 at 50 yards with a 45 using home cast bullets and my own reloads at an NRA match once.

ChCx2744 I agree with you. I think it was the instructors way of showing how futile it was to engage at that distance with a handgun, hence the talk after scoring about why we have ARs and why they are better at engaging a suspect at distance.

Rabbit at 53 yards using my ruger mark iii hunter .22 lr.

Other than that 310 yards grapefruit using this.:p
T/C encore .308 winchester 15" with a 2-6x32 Bushnell elite scope.

200 yards hunting Antelope with a .44mag.....because of the severe bullet drop at that distance, set the scope for that distance and practiced all summer. It almost becomes an exercise in ranging artillery.

^^^ Holy moly that would be a tough shot with a .44 mag. I am very impressed.

I bought my T/C to hunt mule deer with. I could never get close enough with my .44 mag SRH that I was comfortable taking a shot.

200 yd's pretty regularly with a 500 s&w or the 460 with the 500 being a lttle more consistent. 335gr JHP, 42.3grs. 1680. A lite load that produce's great result's at 200 and a hell of a lot better at 100 yd's. These thing's are tack driver's at 100 yd's. but you need a good scope. I use a Nikon Encore on all my pistol's. For the money, you just can't beat it IMHO. Picture100.gif Gunsandthings019.gif sorry about the oversize, i'm new to this

Furthest accurate or just furthest?

I've hit steel plates at 165yrds with a .45acp. You can hear a faint "plink" after a little delay. Did it on a bet from a guy shooting a DE .50AE. He was hitting 1 in 6, bet that I couldn't even get that far with a .45acp. I hit 10 of 13.

Furthest I've shot at a target for accuracy was at an USPSA match. 50yrds with my SP01 (Production division gun, tweaked by me with guidance by Angus, running 124gr bunny fart rounds), hit in the A zone & up to 3in outside the A zone. Kinda funny lobbing those rounds in...was laughing about how far I had to hold over to hit the torso portion of the target. Granted we were on a time limit...6secs standing relaxed, holstered, 5rnds; 7secs going to a knee; 8secs to go prone.
