What's your unicorn?

... a 1942 Mauser "tonne" Luger P08 in mint condition, with holster, original mag, two cartons of issued ammo .... and since the son of the owner knew the whole history of it - an authentic gun, which dealt its share of destruction
on friend and foe in WW2.

It was like "meeting" a gun. I knew all about them, but this was the 1st one i held. The mechanism and feel are amazing.

I wish i had bought it. around 1.000$ is not a bad price IMHO.

Like a few here, I've captured some of my unicorns, my M16 & HK registered sear pack were my biggies ...

I still have a couple unicorns, but unless I win the lottery they will never happen;

1. Something belt-fed, prefferably an M249 SAW ...

2. The Pig, M60E4

Who knows though ... If I got to shoot them they may drop off my list.

Unicorns--mine are few, skewered upon their impracticality: 6mm Navy Lee; Colt M1895 in 6mm Lee; 2pdr Naval Galloper gun; SMAW; Johnson LMG; etc.

Have a couple "white whales" I'd happily stump after, ere I found my Peaquod.
That Nat'l Postal Meter M-1 Carbine with a stock stamp from a Ship's Armory. Was in my hands and almost mine when an emergency required all my ready cash.
The "bubba-ed" Garand in 7.62 that only needed a correct stock and a correct rear sight (instead of the scope mount that was there). Hour late and $50 short on that one.
The Fair to Good Savage P1917 with Philadelphia Navy Yard markings--left the table it was on at a show--naturally, it was gone when i got back again.

I've been fortunate enough to have purchased nearly all my "unicorn" firearms. I've also sold most of them, as the hunt is the most fun.:D

Rufer birdshead simulated ivory grips

I sought out the stainless old model birdshead for years and finally found it. It did not have the white Ruger simulated ivory grips and i have looked for a set ever since. That is my unicorn

Revolver- A Ruger Redhawk in .45 colt, 4" barrel with custom bonded ivory grips to match the ones on my Blackhawk.

Pistol- I don't really care for auto-chuckers but I used to have an EAA Witness in .45 acp. I traded it away to get my unicorn rifle, but I wouldn't mind picking up one in 9mm next time around for the cheap ammo and the extra capacity if things get desperate.

Shotgun- A 20 gauge coach gun with rebounding external hammers and an ejector rather than an extractor.

Rifle- Already have it, a Rossi trapper model .357 lever action with the Marble's bullseye sight. I love that little gun and I wouldn't trade her for the world. I would love to get her tuned by Steve's guns someday though.

All of this is assuming that ammo isn't an issue, what I wouldn't give to have some of those movie guns like Kevin Costner has in Open Range that never run out of ammo. Never before have I seen a SAA shoot 16 shots, though some of those Cowboy Action guys come darn close. :)

A USA-made, 9-lug variant of the Weatherby Mark V, blued steel, chambered in .270 Winchester.

I'll second the Walther P5. Not super rare, but i'm not currently willing to spend $900 - $1,000 for one in average shape with no spare mags or accessories.

In the short term, i'll settle for some 7.62x25 Tokarev, so i can actually SHOOT the CZ52 i picked up 6 months ago.

Two Actually, got both (finally)!

Remington Custom Shop 40XR BR KS, about 200 made. now out of production.

Russian Olympic MTs-12 with double-lever triggers. I saw lots of chopped-up junkers. Finally found and anted up for a cherry.

Yes, you can build a bolt-on scope base w/o modifying the rifle. There are 5 each m5.80 holes D&T'ed in the male dovetail that holds the rear sight.

Two, and I'm closing on one.

1) A New Ultra Light Arms Model 24 in .280 Remington or 30/06. I'll be ordering it within the month.

2) A muzzleloading rifle built by hand, whether that's by me or someone else. I'd really like a Hershel House, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

If you can order it (custom or distributor), it's not a "unicorn." If there's a bunch on Gunbroker this instant, it's not a unicorn. These are the guns you wistfully lust after for years, knowing full well you may only find them a few times, let alone be able to obtain them. A creature only glimpsed in the wild by a lucky few; a white whale (and you'd be lucky if you are able to buy it without losing your leg in the deal ;) ). The impossible ideal we're certain we'll never come across, and which can't possibly be as good in real life as we hope it is ;)

"A pistol caliber carbine in 9mm or .40 that takes XD mags."
You mean a Sub2000?

I've never owned one, but I would really like to have a Beretta BM-59. It's basically an M-1 Garand with a 20rd detachable box magazine. I've seen them on gunbroker.com for $3000 to $5000.

stgw-57 I have spent too much time longingly looking at the kits on apex. hopefully they will some left when I have some extra cash.

I could have purchased a brand new in the box Valtro direct from John Jardine for $1,100.00. Was a bit tight on money at the time.

Last one I saw was well over $5k. Nicest 1911 I have ever shot.

To follow up on what barnbwt said.

One of my unicorns had been a Colt 1903. That is, until I found one at my favorite LGS. An ugly-duckling, charlie-brown-christmas-tree, but, at a hugely attractive price. About 30% "white" on the starboard side, and easily 50% on the port side; with a busted top to the left grip panel (L & R stocks did not match, either). But, that pistol was willing to shoot like it was race-tuned.

Sadly, 2008 intervened, and the 1903 had to find a better home.

So, no longer a unicorn, and not a white whale, either. Other than I'll measure all other 1903 to the standards of that ugly duckling that could prism.

I wouldn't mind a Beretta 8045 'D' - Not real expensive, but the D triggers can be hard to find period, with 45acp being the most rare version.

My first unicorn is a ruger redhawk in .357 magnum, which i will be buying off my grandfather in a few months.:D My second unicorn, a coonan 1911 .357 magnum... I sometimes shed a tear when I think about it.:( ... oh and a detonics 1911 .45 combat exactly what sara connor used in terminator two, i smile when i think of it.

Custom bolt action rifle based on a Surgeon Remington 700-style action chambered in .260 Remington with a Night Force or Schmidt Und Bender 16x or 20x scope. Barrel from Krieger, suppressor from Thunder Beast Arms, all nestled in the AI stock currently sitting forlornly in the back of my safe.

Oh, and as long as I'm dreaming, the reloading dies and components to go with it.
