re:bottom feeder

I never thought I'd be proud to be called a bottom feeder but I guess I am :p . That made my day!

Thanks for the chuckle and good advice.

An alternative to the Smith 625 in 45acp is the new Taurus Tracker in 45acp. It's a little smaller and 200 dollars cheaper than the Smith 625. The only downside is it only holds 5 rounds but with the moonclips reloads are as fast as an auto . I love mine, it's accurate and reliable. I have owned mine about a year but have put quite a few rounds thru it. Absolutely zero problems. You can probably pick it up for a little over $400.

Then there's the multi-talented Dan Wesson 460/7460. It handles the .45acp, .45 Super, .45 Win Mag, and the .460 Roland with absolutely no changes or alterations. Plus it has the advantage of switching barrel lengths.

re: .45 ACP

I'm looking at my thermometer and it is 62F in the sun...the 1911 bug is biting hard...I may take Sport45's advice and go the 1911 route...expect I would shoot that all summer and could easily take it indoors shooting WC's...or even a conversion kit to shoot .22LR, or BOTH...THEN use a year end bonus or tax return to get the wheelie...I'm conflicted;) ...if only money were no object.:p

I need to visit one of my favorite shops this weekend to get some sight work done...I'll look at wheelies and 1911's and see which one bites harder.

Thanks again to all for the great advice.

Best wishes,

Now wait just a minute there.... I didn't advise you to get a 1911, I assumed you had one. For shooting lead get a K-frame Smith. You can shoot it all you want and never have to stoop down to pick up 38 or 357 brass.

Then wait an appropriate amount of time and get the 1911 ;)

Too late, I bought a Springfield Mil-Spec...250 rounds through it this weekend...I love it!!

Since the weather is warming up, I expect to be shooting outside quite a bit...I have opportunity to earn a bonus later this year that should cover a wheelie...just in time for the cold weather to show up and move me indoors. Gives me more time to research revolvers and figure out which one I want...

Thanks Sport45!

Good deals abound in police trade revolvers (carried a lot, shot a little).

I am very happy with my Smith 64-6 .38 4".

Just like mil-surps, I think cop-surps also offer up a bit o' history!:D

If pride of ownership and store-of-value are to be considered, I'd look for a Smith and Wesson M27-2, the N-frame (larger even the the 686) .357 magnum. It's considerable bulk would make shooting .38's very pleasant, and make your outdoor .357 shooting very manageable. The -2 was the last of the "pinned and recessed" 27's, and they are usually of great quality in the fit and finish. If at some point you decide to part with it, you'd certainly get a good price for it. Just FWIW.

You get to imagine where the gun has been, what would have been seen and heard, and if it ever shot a Bad Guy.

In this semi-auto world we're in, all revos are "sleepers" lately!

The top of the crop, IMHO, and no particular order:

S&W 14,15,19, and 27.

Ruger Security Six. (For a rare breed, find a Redhawk in .357.)

Colt Diamondback, Python.

I like my buddy Ala Dan's GP-100 and 686 suggestion.

A mega sleeper is the Colt King Cobra. It's a SS .357 with adjustable sights and Pachmayr Grips. It was also available in Bright Polish Stainless. I have one, it's kind of a safe queen becuase they don't make them anymore. If you see one at a decent price, pick it up, you'll like it.

Smith and Wesson
The K frame 38 specials are nice. Chaim listed the models above. You can probably find them used in good shape. I'd suggest that you read the revolver check out at the top of this group of topics.

the S&W 686 is a little more stout than the model 66. The 686 and 66 will let you shoot 38 specials and when you want that oomph you can go to a 357 magnum cartridge. I'd suggest that you go that route because a 357 magnum is very versitle.

Ruger:
Speed Six/Security Six. The difference is that the Security Six has adjustable sights I believe. Used I have seen these around $300 or slightly less. GP-100 is their current offering. I don't think that you can get it in 38 speical but I'm not sure. I've heard good things about them but haven't tried one.

I'd recommend a 4" or 6" barrel 357 magnum. This would give you a lot of versitility.

I'd also recommend that you look at a Smith and Wesson 625 which will accept 45acp cartridges on a moon clip. That way you wouldn't have to keep another type of ammuntion on hand. There are also 45 Colt chambered version of this revolver around.

I'd also suggest that you avoid the titanium framed guns because these would be really light and I haven't heard of a lot of people enjoy shooting these firearms.

www.smith-wesson.com and www.rugerfirearms.com are good sites for you to start looking at.

Good luck.

Thanks for the good advice!

As mentioned earlier, I decided to buy that 1911 I had been putting off instead of a wheel gun (for now).

However, I'm expecting to set aside some bonus/tax return money later in the year and will be diligently researching the good advice you've provided.

So far, I'm leaning toward a 4" .357 Mag', with the 686 or GP100 at the top of my list...want to do some continued research on the Dan Wesson models too.

I'm going to want Hogue FG grips for it because nothing fits my hands like them.

I just joined IDPA, so the 4" barrel seems to make the most sense if I want to consider entering the Service Revolver division.

Again, thanks to all of you for the good advice...I'll be keeping my eyes open at the gunshows for a can't leave it on the table bargain.

Best wishes and safe shooting,
