I'm a very dilligent gun owner. After each trip to the range, I clean my guns. At regular intervals, I detail strip and soak each tiny little part in #9 prior to a good scrubbing.

I view carbon deposits around AR15 gas rings as a sign of indolence, and the slightest frosting in my M39s as mark of shame.

Well, much to my surprise, I was told by my dentist yesterday that I have suffered some bone loss in my lower mandible at the age of 27! I brush regularly, but my mistake was that I didn't floss enough. Apparently, when food particles get stuck between teeth, the bacteria eats away directly at the bone. So while my teeth are in pretty much perfect condition, a small portion of my jaw has been literally eaten away.

So, when you pack your SHTF bag, don't forget floss and toothbrushes. Besides the simple fact that all the guns and ammo in the world won't do you much good if you don't have teeth to eat with (good luck getting dentures in a prolonged SHTF), here are some other motivating reasons to keep floss and brushes in your bag:

Toothbrushes
can be used to clean guns after wearing out
can remove dirt and debris from foraged food
can be used to maintain leather boots, etc
the handles make good utility material

Floss
can be used to remove particles from eyeballs
can be used for snares
make good pull through cleaning snakes (tie other end to patch holder)

The point is, there is more to SHTF than simply packing guns - you need to think about the tiny things that in a SHTF can quickly become crippling.
