The 870 I have now has a 24 inch barrel, but this makes it impractical for home defense and I don't want to buy a new gun or cut down the barrel I have now (I shoot trap and skeet with it). So I was wondering, does anyone know of an online vendor that sells 18 inch barrels for the Remington 870?

All answers will be appreciated.

I believe that they're actually 18.5" and listed as such. Try Googling that.

I know that Cabela's has them, as do others.

I would jump on the barrel that's available in the link "Smitty in CT" supplied above. You won't find a 18.5" barrel for the 870 at that price anywhere else. They usually will cost you no less that $129 and up to $149. At a price of $89.99 they won't last very long...

Thats actually a barrel made by mossberg to fit an 870. It's not that amazing of a deal--I've seen them for $99.

Also the barrel is blue and has rifle sights which is fine if you have a wingmaster but hideous if you have an Express.

Never saw one of the Mossberg barrels for an 870. What are the other differences between them and the Remington barrels? How does the quality compare?

I've been curious about this for a while.

Mossberg makes some of the best barrels out there...

Back in the day.... they used to make the barrels for Winchester and Ithaca, before they both closed their doors...

Does anyone know if the barrels Mossberg makes for the 870 have the ball detent on the barrel ring?

Actually, the limit is 18 inches before you have to get the tax stamp. Try googling it.

By the way, Cabela's was a good idea--they offer 18 inch barrels for $120.

Thanks to all who answered. Also, my shotgun is an 870 Express Magnum, which I should have included.

That is true sandwich, BUT the big manufacturers don't make barrels any shorter than 18.5". With the penalties they could suffer due to a screw up(during manufacture), I think they would just rather add another .5". Nothing stopping you from cutting off the rest yourself, but I don't think the extra half an inch is worth the effort.

I don't know if I want those ugly rifle sights that come with it though...

I don't have enough information to know if that is true or not, but you could be right. At any rate, I am kind of curious now. I think I will measure the barrel when I get it (I am not being condescending either, I am actually curious). It is listed as being 18" on the website.

If you are looking for one, I will be selling off my Remngton 18 inch Cylinder Bore, beaded front sight. . This is factory original from an unfired gun 870 HD.
Cabela sells them for $120 , I will sell it for $115 and shipping included .

I just looked at Remington's .pdf parts catalog. They have listed an 18" IC parked bead for $96.40. The blued version goes for $144. There are others in 18" listed as well. The catalog is on their website in the support section. I have ordered many parts through them over the phone.

Thanks for the offer, I will keep it mind. The only thing is that I am not sure when I will buy the barrel. I have bills to pay first. With that in mind, when I am ready to buy a barrel I will contact you and see if you still have it. Just to warn you though, it might be a few months. If you sell it before that, I won't have any problem with that.
