Those things above look like it would cover part of the barrel you need to run the patch through do they not? The one I saw a guy use at a gun shop just slid right in the end to just protect the muzzle from getting messed up from the cleaning rod. Is that not what I want?

A bore guide does not protect the muzzle, only the end of the chamber and the throat, it slides into the chamber at the breach and is seated at the transition from end of chamber to throat. It sounds like you are describing a muzzle protector. I never use one, as I clean my rifles (and pistols) from the breach (even my Ruger 10/22 and others which do not permit the use of a bore guide).
