I've been looking for a winchester CRF action for sale, I can't find them anywhere! I've looked for the Mauser 98 CRF variation and I can't find them either!! Is this just a hit or miss deal? Am I going to have to buy a complete rifle to get one? I was looking into 7mags or 270.

The Mauser 98 is not a variation; it's the original. The Win. is the variation.
Finding actions not sold by the manufacture as such has always been hard-who keeps a barrel and sells the action?
I would look for a cut up M98/beat FN Browning"salt damaged stock" complete gun.

blackops,

Hit the gunshows and pick up a used M70 Classic rifle. Then, sell off all the parts except the action. You might also check gunbroker.com and the other internet sites for a used rifle.

Interarms Mauser actons used to be available pretty cheap. You could also pick up a used Remington 798 pretty cheap for the action. They use the Interarms action. www.cdnnsports.com has some FN actions (Winchester made and rebranded) for $350. They are only available for the WSM cartridges however. A 7mm WSM might not be a bad round if you reload.

Seriously, thank you all for the help! I wanted to get a new action, not used. I understand that is going to be far more difficult, but I really wanted every piece new. I would't want to mount a beat up action on a new krieger. What are the pros and cons to a new action vs used? I wanted to send the action to krieger have them mount it then send that to hs. Bad idea? Im new at this custom thing.

CDNN had FN Model 70 actions for sale. I don't know if they still do, but they did a few weeks ago. Contact them ASAP.

If you pick an appropriate used action it'd be just as good. Whoever does the work will modify or "accurize" the action before installing the barrel anyway. If you look at what's done in that process it becomes clear a used action would work just as well and in some cases the older actions are actuall superior in construction. That is certainly the case in 700's. They made their best actions decades ago. Actions from the 70's and early 80's are sought after for custom builds. They were even advertised as "honed" and are much smoother.

Send off the barreled action for finishing at the end and get a better finish than factory. Some barrel mfg's will accurize the action, install the barrel and blue the whole works. Shilen and Krieger both do great work. I've never had anything blued from Krieger though.

I was unable to find the FN actions on their website, but I emailed them and will probably call them tomorrow. Thanks Armed. Horse, I'm also willing to buy a used right now. I simply can't find new or used right now. Also what does "accurize" really mean anyway.

Accurize as I understand it means to true up the receiver treads with the face where the barrel shoulder tightens up, fit a barrel and then lap in the bolt lugs to 100% contact.
What kind of hurry are you in? I found several as lost dogs at gun shows[ugly stocks, rebarreled to weird calibers, etc.]

Only the accessories show up on CDNN's website. You will have to download the catalog to see the guns. Remember that the actions offered by CDNN will only work with the WSM line of cartridges.

blackops,

Any gunsmith worth his salt, is going to true/blueprint your action prior to installing a new barrel. This entails: truing the receiver face, truing the bolt face, chasing the threads, and lapping the bolt lugs. Since machining work is going to be done on your action, it doesn't matter whether you start with a new or used action.

You would have to ask CDNN, but it looks as one type of short action is available in the 308 case head.

Their catalog page is confusing.

In the past, when I wanted to make a match rifle around a Winchester M70, I had to buy a complete rifle. Then I was able to get a CDNN action.

I am sitting on it. It is having a lottery ticket. I can dream about the wonderful things I am going to do.

There's been quite a few complaints about MRC lately. Should come up in a search if anyone's interested. They are a cast receiver.

Thank you all for your input and opinions. I contacted CDNN they have only 308 actions. Still looking for that 270 in a hay stack. I have a couple people keeping an eye open.

Jim, I’m not in a complete rush and don’t expect this to come together soon.

Slam, did you really have to show me that? Ha j/k

Float, I do fancy the Montana’s and if I ever decide to make a serious classic custom hunting rifle I wouldn’t mind starting with their hunter actions.

USSR, again thank you for the knowledge. I have a feeling I could seriously talk guns with you for hours a day.

Montana Rifle Company

I can't speak regarding recent production but MRC built me a S/S barrelled action in 325 WSM before any were available, anywhere else. I had to handload ammo working backwards from a recipe a guy gave me for his 338 WSM wildcat as no ammo was out and no load data had been released.
My first set of 3 rounds were melting a miniscus on the primer dents. I had loaded several sets of 3 with 0.25 grains between them. After going down to the 4th set it disappeared, so I went down one more for good measure and stuck with that. That load pushes a 200 gr Nosler partition 3110 - 3150 fps whenever I chrono it. This tells me that the first 9 rounds I put through it were damn hot and the load I use is still pretty hot.
I took it to Namibia and was the first person to tag any african game with the cartridge. Two Kudu, two Gemsbuck, Hartebeest, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, zebra, eland, a lot of warthogs and a whole bunch of jackals. Back here its taken several mulies, and a nice 6X5 Elk. I've put a handful over 250 rounds through it and have not had a single problem. I was really quite pleased with the barrel (octagonal hvy sporter taper). It shoots better than I do. If I bench it they all go MOA or a little less unless I screw it up. So far no signs of any problems with the action whatsoever. They were great guys to deal with. I had Seregeti put it in one of their 5 piece laminated stocks. I love it. All that said it is hard to go wrong with one of those FN actions from CDNN.

Brownells has Ruger MKII barreled actions, they are close to a pre 64 Winchester (Mauser) action, with a few refinements. If you can put up with the proprietary integral scope mounts and the angled front action screw and the two peice bottom metal. The one peice bolt,3 position wing style saftey,( Ruger style) , flat bottom receiver and non-rotating claw type extractor, fixed ejector and internal box magazine are all features found on the Winchester.
