Where did you find your Makarov?

Why did you chose a Makarov?

What are the best ones to get, reliability wise?

I talked my wife into getting one for herself, and am going to have a relative get it for us and hold it in the states. I don't know when these will dry up, so I want to get it over with.

Any advise?

I'm not so sure these will dry up soon. Thousands were made over the years and the way the world is going, the US is the only place that will allow guns. Besides, it fires the 9x18, not a round you can exactly get at Wally World.

Don't get me wrong. I have one and it's really cool. I may even start carrying it exclusively, but for the masses, it's not a typical Glock.

Russian (Baikal) in .380 acp

I got it from my local dealer (www.armaq.com)

why?? Because it was the most inexpensive gun in the rack, but my Glock 25 was bought after the Baikal and it is starting to jam..the makarov still performs great!!!

- EG Mak - Local gunshop - 3 years ago - $170
- Unissued Bulgarian Mak - Ammoman.com - 3/02 - $159 - they stopped selling guns I believe.

- Got them because of all the great things I heard about them on the now defunct Firing Line forum. Very attractive price as well.

- All are very reliable, can't speak for the Chinese Maks though, they're fairly rare. Most believe the EGs have the best fit & finish but I haven't heard anyone claim they're more reliable than Bulgarians.

Hi Glockster.

The mak is a great gun but you might want to consider one point if its for your wife. Since it is a blowback operated pistol, the slide can be difficult for some women to work...my sister and mother cannot do it. You can make it easier by installing a lower powered recoil spring but then you wouldn't want to shoot it much that way since it would be hard on the gun with full power loads.

The East German's are considered to be the best and IMO they have the best finish and least amount of tool marks. The second best are the Bulgarians and IMO they are the best buy. The Bulgarians may have some tool marks and be slightly rougher than the EG, but they work just as well if not better (my Bulgie has a smoother and lighter trigger than my EG). You have to look a bit to find the EG's but Bulgarians are very easy to find. PW Arms has just imported a bunch of Bulgarian maks which are readily available from places like SOG or Dan's Sporting Goods (?) for about $150 plus shipping.

Unissued Bulgarian Makarov still in the cosmo from a local dealer. Paid way too much (over $200) but I had to get one because it is the gun that everyone has been talking about. I like it but I think I over paid.

On order right now from a group buy on another gun board.

Which other gun forum is doing that?

3 different Maks from 3 different local dealers since 1997 or so. Costs $145 (Baikal .380), $136, and the most recently $175 (2 Bulgarians).

My wife bought hers at J&G Sales... $110 or so... good price for a good pistol and a nice 2hr or so drive up to the snow... what's not to like? She loves it.

cheers

If I were going to get a Bulgarian Mak today( have an EG and a Bulgarian) , I would call Dan's Ammo. They have some newly imported ones. For a little extra, you can get an unissued one. SOG has had some unissued ones but it is hit or miss as to whether you'd get one or not. Nothing wrong with Maks that are used but I just like to have an unissued one, kinda neat to have a 20+ year old "new" gun. They don't have them on their website but they do have them - you must have it shipped to an FFL of course.

Got a Bulgarian Mak has a gift. Surprisingly accurate. It is now my wife's nightstand gun.

I bought my first Makarov at a shop I wandered into. It was a flawless Bulgarian that came with a holster and an extra mag. I bought my second Bulgie Mak at a gun show. It was nearly perfect, and cheap for $129. with extra grips.

I chose to buy a Makarov because I wanted an inexpensive but solidly made plinker. That was the impression I had gotten of of them from the posts I had read on a few forums. I bought the second one because I loved shooting the first one so much, and it was right there in front of me begging to be bought.

So far my two Bulgies have had no problems. I have put about 400 rounds through each.

Regards, Keys
