Where do I find a Winchester action?

I'm not sure what you have in mind, but I'd start looking around at gunshows, pawnshops, etc. and try to find a used model 70 in any caliber that uses a .30-06 boltface. Hunting season being what it is prices are sometimes depressed during the summer.

Does anyone know if my memory is right that the pre-'64 receivers were forged, and post-'64 receivers (both "classic" CRF and push feed) are cast? Has anyone seen any reports indicating that there's any practical difference?

yes, montana rifleman. i was in a hurry, that's why i wasn't more specific. i haven't heard anything about them, but they look like nice receivers.

dakota arms receivers are nice, but cost way too much.

Why Ya'll so into the Montana?

After action report

So do these actions suck or what?

Many are critical, but take note that their critical reviews are often tempered with the remark that they could make similar critiques of most factory (i.e. non-custom) actions. The forum has several people who are very critical of Montana Rifleman, mostly due to the excessive amount of time it is taking to get their actions to market. This is generally dismissed as due to the company being rather small, and rather new.

Their actions are cast by Ruger (Pine Tree Castings). There is some debate on cast vs forged, but I believe it is largely academic. Ruger's actions are cast, and Ruger's actions are tough. While cast actions may be inherently weaker than forged ones, the degree to which they are weaker is not necessarily enough to make them unsafe, or even noticeably less durable.

I have a friend who builds high end custom rifles. He has built 6 rifles using the Montana Rifleman action and has been very pleased with them. Their barrels are top rate also, I have used a couple of them on my projects and they all shoot way under MOA. They are good people to deal with and will make up just about any barrel that you desire.
Good shooting, John K
