This review is available with maps in table form here: Carry Review

Ranking of States from the perspective of maximum Concealed Carry Permit Recognition (Updated as of 10-7-07) (Data from http://handgunlaw.us)
Ranking system:
Number of States that recognize your permit at all = primary consideration
Number of States that recognize your non-resident permit (if one is issued): secondary consideration (tie breaker)
One half additional point awarded to States that do not require a permit to carry concealed weapons

The info is laid out as follows:
Name
Ranking (1=most recognition; 2=next most; etc.)

Hawaii should be rated in with the fails. Even though it is a may issue State, no one has a permit from Hawaii. Not even retired LEO, the State has been dragging it's feet on that one since the Federal law went into effect.

I know, there are several States like that or close to it. I was not trying to rank the nuances of the various States, though. It took enough of my free time just to do what I did.

possessed

atimetobuild: Sir; just outstanding:D I could only guess what would possessed you:) but quite interesting. :D
Thanks;

I'm a michigander. I was under the impression Michigan wouldn't recognize non-resident permits if you weren't a resident of that state? i'll try to go check on that....

Glad I live in TN

ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!:)

FOR THOSE TENNESSEANS:
Comes the first of Jan. 2008 the right to carry in parks is supposed to come back up in the State House and Senate; it was tabled earlier this year until 2008. Get ready for to call all Reps.

MI only recognizes permits from your state of residence. However, I do believe it recognizes everyone's permit, regardless if they accept a Michigan or not.

I was planning a trip to upstate NY, and handgun.org says they recognize MI permits, but I called to check, 'cause I'm funny like that. I was told by the State Police that NY does not recognize ANY other state's carry permits, and that there is NO WAY a non-resident can posess a handgun legally in NY State. So what's up?

BTW, my first call was to the AGs office, who handed me off to Albany SP headquarters...

To clarify, no part of my study covered how many other States a given State recognized- only how many other States recognized the permits from the State in question. Totally differerent numbers, and apparently the source of some of the confusion in the replies.

God bless Texas. We can hunt groundhogs with a .50 BMG and no one can say a thing to us.

id hardly say VT is an "honorable mention"

its the goal which we all should strive towards. your scale is for firearm licenseing. i hardly think thats the ideal we all share. complete lack of firearm licenseing for law abiding citizens is much closer to the goal.

Hoppy,

As mentioned earlier, the only criteria for this current ranking is how many other States recognized the permits from the State in question. Based on that, VT should have no mention at all. The only reason they are included at all is because I respect their lack of regulation. Truth be told, though, until all the States repeal their concealed carry laws completely, AK is the only State with a good system. They have no concealed carry prohibition, but also issue permits, so that their citizens can carry in other States. VT has no recourse but to turn to another State to get a non-resident permit, which limits their options, and their recognition.

Again, this is not a ranking of the best gun laws, only of recognition of permits.

I have an Ohio (resident) permit and a PA (non-resident) permit and am covered in 30 states, Florida would give me only 3 more states. How can I get a Michigan or Tennessee out of state permit to help fill in a few more of the blanks?? Or are there any others fairly easy to obtain that will cover the states I'm not covered in?

Here's a link to the reciprocity maps by the Individual State and a Multi-State map too.

If you could, would you send the links/pertinent info to the webmasters of handgunlaw [admins-at-handgunlaw.us] so that they can update their maps? That is how they stay current, and (since packing.org is down) they are the biggest/best source of info that I know of.

stolivar, I did not count each State as recognizing myself, that seemed a little redundant. You included Missouri in Missouri's count- that is why you came up with an extra State.
