Where to find BP info?

I want to buy a BP revolver and a rifle.
Of course, I don't want to find out later I'd rather have bought differently.

- Where is the biggest forum for BP?
- Any BP links pages?
- How do I find out which companys there are in this area?

I want to buy a rifle for hunting, but the main point will be pride of ownership. I need to know all the models available to choose one.
I want quality and a cool design, but not way expensive. I don't mind building myself. Maybe a "Kentucky" style cap-n-ball. Flintlock looks more cool, but might not be good for hunting.

For a revolver, the main point will be looking cool. Won't shoot it much.

- How much of an issue is no access to the breech in cleaning a muzzle loader?

There's a consensus that the Lyman Great Plains rifle is the best buy, for both authenticity and performance. Flinters did the job for over 200 years and a modern in-line won't do much more. I admit that there is a bit of a learning curve.

I got a very nice T/C Hawkings from a friend who has a large stack of new ones in his closet. I got a great price and was able to hand pick one which has nice wood.

I also got a VERYYYY nice 1860 Army by Uberti with the light blue blueing.
I found the store on Gunbroker and he said he once sold the best looking one he ever saw to a local guy. So, he went and bought it back in trade and sold it to me. What tremendous customer service!

Now I just need a cool hat and coat and I'll be all set to hunt some wild boar around here. Maybe I'll get a deer in a few weeks and make my own coat.

Is the Hawken a Flintlock or Caplock? .50cal? Whatever, you'll love it

If you call Thompson Center (603-332-2394) and talk with their customer service people, they should send you a copy of their instruction manual on shooting muzzleloaders - it has tables of recommended loads, etc.

It's a caplock in 50 cal. It came in the original box with the manual & such.
But, it's old (new) and maybe a newer book would have more in it.
Being able to take my choice from maybe a dozen rifles is what pushed me to buy it, plus the low price. I paid original wholesale from years ago.

I bought everything I need to shoot both guns, but havn't done so yet. I'll get to it after various hunting trips.

The biggest thing I need right now is permission to hunt pigs on private land here in Calif. Ten years ago, you could do it anywhere. But everything has tightened up.

The 2nd thing I need is a period coat & hat. I have to decide on "Mad Trapper" or Davey Crocket. I'll also have to get an appropriate holster/belt for the revolver.

I'd sure like to get instructions on making a hat and coat or shirt. I kind of want to do a skunk hat to be funny. But, I can get a coon right in my neighborhood or anywhere else. Guess I'll wait until January for that so the fur is nice. Making my own stuff would save a ton of money & I really like to learn new skills and would also be proud to say "yeah, I made it".

When I got my first caplock, I also ordered all the accessories I could think of. Had it all spread out on the living room floor to take inventory (to make sure they had shipped everything). Wife walks in, takes one look and says "You didn't have enough toys when you were a little boy, did you?"
