My son wants to build a gun.... at first he was thinking from scratch (he's 14 with some wild ideas... lol), but I think I have him convinced that making one from a kit would be a good idea first...

We can't find anything aside from some overpriced 1911 kits online... what ever happened to the remakes of the old Army and Navy BP guns? and I remember you used to be able to find some semi auto kits before....

We discussed building an AR15, but that again gets pretty pricey...

We're looking for an inexpensive kit to build together.... any help appreciated... thanks

Cabela's has several different kit guns available, with options. Check out the site and search for kit gun should find something. In the shooting catalog I got a few months ago there's a couple listed in the range of $400 or so IIRC

"Kit Guns", like the SAA, are something that used to be found in Sears & Roebuck catalogs up until the early 1980's.
I remember helping my brother build one when I was a little kid.

I haven't seen any kits like this advertised anywhere in a long time.

You can always buy a Caspian 1911 frame "in the rough" and finish it yourself.

Not sure what a Caspian 1911 is, but the problem there seems to be the cost of all the little parts you need to complete it....

I should mention that I am making him pay for this himself, and although he is working for me doing construction this summer, his budget is limited...

I bought one of those kits for a knockoff Colt Navy revolver from Montgomery Wards for my dad in the '80's, and that is kind of what I was thinking about... but again, can't find them anywhere...

Thanks for the ideas.... I will have him search Cabela's and look up that Caspian and see what it's about....

Any more ideas are welcome....

caspian is a type of 1911. You can find a 1911 frame for around $125 and buy one part at a time (Slide for around 90). The good thing about building a 1911 is that building it correctly is much more involved than an AR or parts changing. This could also prove to be a problem if shortcuts are made. If he wants to build a 1911 pm me and I have some information on building a custom 1911 that I can pass on.

Got a look at the Dixie Gun Works site.... there is possibility there.... thanks... those are what I was thinking, even if his mind is on something more dramatic (the 1911 route)

I will let him decide where he wants to go with this and how much he wants to spend of his hard earned money....

supercopjason- would it be Ok if I had my son contact you about the 1911 builds he might be interested in or that you could help him figure out? I want him to do the majority of the research on this project instead of just being the dad who does it for him and then says "look what we did".... I will help him in any way he needs, but if it's something he can handle, I think he should....

Still open to any ideas out there.... perhaps some cheaper semi auto builds he could do? or even just any cartridge gun (revolver or rifle)... he tends to think black powder is 'primitive' and wouldn't be as fun to shoot... I think the biggest draw on my end is price.... I don't want him to have to save up all summer and blow it all on one thing he may, or may not end up liking doing.... starting with something cheaper seems the best idea....

Either way, we went and opened a checking account today for him to save his money, and he's learning a lot about working for the things you want already...

Thanks guys
