Why are so many posters/members so reluctant to put their location in the "tagline" or whatever section?

When they post about a particular issue that may be regional (like a law), it doesn't give a clue as to where they are posting from...this is really irritating.

I can't be the only one...is it paranoia?

:(

I have just never bothered to update my profile. I ain't hiding nothing. You could probably figure out my region is you studied my name some :)

Seriously I would not be suprised if a lot of people are like me and just never figured to update it. Honestly the only time I look to see where other posters are located is in the classified section. Most topics I read and post on, location is not that important

I'm sure for some its paranoia, although they post in a public forum. I'm sure quite a few of these people are not computer savvy, as that seems most likely. I know some people will assume you already KNOW where they are, as if this entire site was based just up the road from them.

I just like to keep it vague usually, with all things in life.

If I'm talking about something regional, I'll say where I'm from. I wouldnt get any more specific than the county I live in.

I have my area code, that seems like enough info for most posters. I don't mind telling you where I'm at if it pertains to the subject being discussed.

They just want to bogart all those sweet sweet walmart deals.. "My walmart gives away AR's, primers and ammo! Ha!". I gots em all figured out.

I don't put my location cause I don't want to be lumped in with the typical stereotypes that people can have with certain states. If my location has direct bearing on the topic at hand I have no problem saying my location, otherwise it doesn't really matter where I'm from.

I'd put "California, by gum!" if I lived in California.

Haha. I would but teh interwebs have me confused on if it's spelled with a "K" or a "C".

Having had angry people call me for my letters to the editor I can see why some do not want to allow locations. With web sites such as ZABA Search it is not to difficult to pin someone down and locate where they live. Caution is advised as some nuts are likely to look you up and try and make trouble.

Yeah, that's the other thing. It's not paranoia at all to think someone can track you down with just a few bits of info. I'm an admin on another forum, not firearms related, and it's pretty impressive what some savvy people can come up with.

True, given the will and certain skills, one can be found regardless of username/"location" etc. unlesss perhaps certain proxies etc are used.. I don't really know about that though.. I'm kinda stone-age keeping up with different tech type stuff.

One of our moderators is a super-sleuth. With your IP address, he can pull up your credit history...criminal record...military service record...and no doubt, also your SSN. We're all very lucky that he's an honorable man.

Anybody who doubts this can Google "Wenzel." :uhoh:

For some people I think it's the same reason they only buy guns FTF, so there's less recorded information about them.

For others I think it's because they're indifferent.

For me, I like where I live, a lot, and I don't mind people knowing where that is.
