I don't know if many (or any) here watch 24 on Fox, but I just have to rant.......about Hollywood & me.......

<rant>
On the latest episode of 24, Jack Bauer must kill Ryan Chappelle. I won't try to explain it all here, but Jack does not want to do it, and there is much anguish, etc., etc. When the time comes, Jack reluctantly draws his pistol (I think it is an HK) and racks the slide. This is the great, capable Federal Agent Jack Bauer, why isn't his firearm ready for immediate use? I know it's just Hollywood's twisted & incorrect way to grab for a little more dread in this scene. You know it's coming, but it still irritates. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Of course, here is a scene where a man is about to die. Ryan doesn't want to die & Jack doesn't want to kill him (they were forced into this by the terrorist), and I'm momentarily caught up in the drama......AND THEN.....he racks the slide. My purist mind takes over at that point, & I'm stuck on why his pistol wasn't ready in the first place, thus missing the effect that the producers/directors/writers/etc. intended. Oh well.....what can you do? It is a struggle........so much misinformation.........

</rant>

Ok, I'm done. Thanks for listening. I'll be fine.....really........

Regards,

Ah, but the USP Compact's safety sounds just like a slide racking. Jack is just thumbing the safety on and off each time he prepares to fire.

:neener:

Just a thought- you may want to put a spoiler warning for those who have not seen this far in the series. I'm totally with you on the round-chambered thing, by the way.

I have it on tape. I'll have to go back and look at it again slowly. I thought I saw Jack drop the mag, and then chamber check (open the slide). My thinking at the time was that Jack didn't want to give Chapelle more ammo than he needed in case he decided to punk out.

That always cracks me up. The pistolero (or shotgunman) is in extreme danger for an hour, and he waits until a moment before he decides to shoot to chamber a round....

Sure...

After reviewing the tapes, the plays stands as FiVe called it.

The slide was in fact racked in a separate part of the scene, and using very crappy techique at that. - thumb and index finger pinch, gun pointing straight up, ejection port next to his right ear ( I guess so he could do an auditory chamber check)

Come on '24' tech guys. We've come to expect better than that from you.

We watched it tonight and Jack hands his daughter a pistol.

Earlier she had said "I have weapons training!".

But does she chamber check or anything?

I said something under my breath - "dont actually chamber check or anything missy"

My wife says "I love how you are so passionate about safety".

Uh, ok :)

edit - oh, and that scene with Jack and Ryan was one of the most messed up things I have ever seen on any show.

I love when they rack the several times in a scene.......I guess you could chamber a few rounds at once......
Yeah the gun stuff is MADDENING in 24..but I'm still hooked...

Sorry about not posting the SPOILER thing............

I agree that the gun blunders are so aggravating.......

It is nice to know we have a common kinship in correct gun foo & readily recognizing Hollywood's gun errors.

Carry on.....

I'm playing "24 Catch-Up" on DVD with a friend, and we're almost done with Season 2. I've seen him rack the slide seconds before breaching a door on more than one occasion. It's funny, because when he gets ambushed and has to fight on the spot, he never does it. I swear that man's clairvoyant.

It's a good show, though. I want one of those CTU SUVs with the arsenal in the back. Sweet. By the way, in the first two seasons he uses a Sig, as far as I can tell.

You know, I was looking for a good smiley to put with the "Sweet" up above, and I couldn't find anything appropriate. Looking more carefully, the smileys here are pretty negative. Those little guys all look angry, frustrated or gloating. Where's the drooling smiley? The "thumb's up" smiley? The "Cheers" smiley? For a board where solidarity and support are so important, I'd expect some friendlier little avatars.

A Plausible Explanation....

Perhaps?

Hollywood shooters use blanks...Right? Right.

Blanks can hurt like sin if the actor happens to violate Rule 3 and doesn't
keep his finger clear of the trigger...Right? Right!

The average hollywood idol knows about enough about guns to...well...viloate Rule 3 and blow a chunk of skin and subcutaenous tissue off his/her leg. Right? RIGHT!

Mighta been on orders from the director who told him that if the gun
should happen to "Go Off" in the holster, that he's gonna be headed for the
ER. Actor figures that the gun can somehow light one off all by itself and
nervously complies. Goes home at the end of the day and takes a
trank to soothe his jangled nerves over havin' to hold such a dangerous
thing in his hand in the name of entertainment.

Maybe...

Cheers!

Has anyone ever seen a movie or TV show where a shooter wiping off the safety was used for a dramatic effect?

By dramatic effect, i'm referring to the countless scenes where the slide is racked or the hammer is cocked.

I don't know that i've ever even seen a safety taken off in any context. Countless glock hammers cocked, slides racked, Highpowers and 1911s cocked back (which means someone must have lowered the hammer on a live round and carried it that way), 1911s and highpowers seeminly firing without a cocked hammer and countless other good ones. I like when they show cops firing their guns sideways. Gangbangers, sure, but cops? comeon.

Of course, mentioning any of this to my wife results in blank looks and hushes.

Here ya go, just for you, buddy!:neener:

Yeah, I'd like to know what option you check at the dealership for the slide out drawer with the entire HK catalog inside. :D

You are correct on the Sig. First 2 seasons was a P229. He switches to HK USPc this season.

[OT] Dell Computer has taken product placement to a whole new level haven't they? [/OT]

The gun stuff can get kind of bad, but really, the show is not about guns.

Especially in the early episodes, the Fords get incredibly conspicuous.

We watched it tonight and Jack hands his daughter a pistol.
Earlier she had said "I have weapons training!".

I said something under my breath - "dont actually chamber check or anything missy"

Funny -- I noticed the same thing and mentioned it to my wife. I mean, if you hand a gun to your daughter - with or without "weapons training" - don't you at least say something like "it's loaded, the safety is a decocker - right here" or "cocked and locked, ready to go" or even a simple "it's loaded".

What bothered me more about when he handed her the gun (than the lack of a check) was that she held onto it like a limp noodle she didn't know what to do with. The reason she didn't know what to do with it is because Jack did not provide her with a holster or any method of carry. She just gets in the 'copter hangin' on to it.

Then when they get to the destination, she's found a super concealed mothod of carry that works with her form-fitting outfit:uhoh: 'cause the gun is put away and she produces it again in a struggle. BTW what kind was it? It looked to me like he handed her a Kahr...but maybe thats just cause I have one!:p

Wouldn't Jack have gotten splattered by "grey matter" when he shot Ryan?

Yeah, I was thinking he better take a step back...:what: Plus the gas from the muzzle at contact distance would be pretty nasty.

Strambo- Being a 24 fanatic (it's practically my effing religion, really.) i sort of gave them the benefit of the doubt in that aspect. It's not too far-out to assume that Kim knew the gun was loaded. Also, she could have been given a holster and checked it on the helicopter ride or during setup. We didn't actually see those parts, and since holstering her gun isn't really a terribly important part of the story they probably didn't think anyone would notice. And as for concealment, remember that she was sitting down much of the time and wearing a jacket. But then i could be wrong, i dunno.

Oh, by the way, i thought it was a Kahr too! :D

The gun handlin' stuff isn't really worth debating...

Oh, by the way, i thought it was a Kahr too!

...this is the important part!:p

Next question: If Kahr, what model? PM9?
