i expect using a rifle-length gas system on a 16" barrel is actually very sensible for the case where you have a suppressor attached.

I would recommend CMMG. I just bought one (18" SPR) and have 470 rounds of Wolf through it with no failures. I'm going to keep going and see just how much ammo it will shoot before needing a cleaning.
