Which 1911 under 650

I am looking to get my first 1911. I was about to get a PT1911 in stainless and starting hearing some negative feedback on them. I am trying to decide between Springfield, Thompson(auto ordnance), or Taurus. I would love to have the Sig but really don't want to spend that much. I am trying to stay in the 500 to 600 range. I appreciate any feedback or other recommendations. Thanks

Go for the Taurus pt1911.

They are a great deal! For all the features, it is a deal.

Very accurate , great trigger out of the box.

Over 1500 rnds out of mine, no problems at all. I have owned many Taurus's over the years, and have had no problems with them.

I have a Rock and a High Standard, both are Armscor 1911s.
My Rock Island Match, which is their top of the line, cost me $500 used.
AMAZING shooter and will feed bricks.
My wifes High Standard Compact is their version of the officers model, bull barrel, novak sights... shoots as well as my Match.
Hers was $440ish.
And they have a warranty better than any I have ever seen.
Ivan, the rep from Advanced Tactical... the US importer, hangs out on m1911.org and handles all issues personally.

I cant recommend them enough.

STI is a US company who cares & will actually handle warranty work, it's a Series 70 design, although it's a foreign frame and slide like the others suggested (Armscor produced just like the RIA's) it's [strike]assembled in the USA[/strike]. EDIT: Apparently not assembled in the US according to others, but at least you would have a US company for QC and warranty issues.

I like my PT1911. Lots of gizmos for a low price. I've had mine for about 2 years, shot several thousand rounds (probably 2/3 of that my own LWCs) with no problems not even a malfunction of any type. There are those that will call a Taurus a "cheap gun". They lack an understanding of economics. Brazil is not a 3rd world country but labor costs are a lot less than the U.S. or western Europe. If you make something standard on all the guns you make it makes them less expensive (the Japanese did this with cars). Some will say the Taurus doesn't have a high resale value but you can't expect a gun that costs less to resell for a big buck gun price.

The only downside to the PT1911 is if you want to put different sights on it is the dovetail is bigger than the standard dovetails. Not a big issue for a competent pistolsmith but it does make it difficult for Joe the Gun Tinker.

Would I buy another? I originally wanted a stainless PT1911 and that will be my next 1911 purchase unless I find some fantastic bargain elsewhere.

Actually, STI ships their fire control parts to Armscor, where is is assembled in the Philippines. But STI does do QC when they get shipped to the states.

I grabbed my Kimber Tactical Pro II for $650 used in mint condition. They're out there, sometimes it takes a little digging to find them. I actually came across mine while I was looking for the identical gun new and it was on backorder. Good luck!

STI sends the internals to Armscor and Armscor assembles the gun and ships it back to STI.
