Contemplating 1911 Purchase...Taurus

Save a little more and get a Colt. I found a slightly used SS Government Model Series 80 for $550.

Id look at alot of 1911's before choosing. Rent them if you can and see what you like...it will save you lots of $ in the long run!

I did a mini shootout with a Springer, Taurus and STI spartan and the STI won hands down. The Taurus I had may have not been a "normal" gun from what Ive heard about them from others....so thats why I say to shoot them and make your own opinion.

Shoot well and god bless

+1. There are better guns out there for just a bit more money. Ones that can be sold if the need arises for what you have in them. While the Taurus might be a great gun, there are enough people out there that don't like them that resale may be an issue.

If you carry regularly, what do you recommend for a holster? Right now I'm just using a Fobus but prefer leather.

Milt Sparks Versa-Max 2 is what I use. Absolutely fantastic, but the wait is murderous on them (I ordered one for a CZ in late Sept, and I'm still waiting- should be within a month or so now). I think Lightning Arms carries them, and they should have one for a 1911 in stock, albeit at a higher price than from Milt Sparks directly (several places carry the MS Summer Special, also a popular one). Just be sure you hang it on a quality gunbelt.

There's other good holsters out there, but it looks to me like the more popular IWB holsters follow the VMII pattern (belt loops out to the sides).

A couple of weeks ago I fired my Taurus and an SA Mil-spec. Yesterday I fired the Taurus and a Kimber Custom Target. I liked the way all three fired. The Taurus had a better trigger than the Mil-Spec. I think I liked the Kimber's sights better than the Heine sights. The Kimber shooter thought the Taurus trigger was better than his Kimber and was recommending that his son buy the Taurus.

My comparison was short but the Taurus compared very favorably with the other two. If I were buying one, I'd get a Taurus.

My PT1911 has been flawless, with a capital F. Mine is the homeland defender model with CT laser grips. I paid, if I recall correctly, $599. The CT's alone cost $250ish, so I think I got a smoking good deal.

If your local dealers are not anywhere near Budds price wise, try this trick. Print out the pic (with price) from Buds site and take it to the store. Ask if they have that gun, showing the pic. If they do, you've already established what your expecting to pay. If the dealer wants to deal, he'll match it. If he comes within $30 or so that's fair, since you won't have to pay any shipping or transfer fees, which you would if you purchased online.

Just as a point of reference, at the gun show in Pasadena, Tx, there were two dealers selling the SS PT1911 for $550. The blue model was just under $500. Funny but I was eyeballing the SS one and getting ready to pick it up to examine it a little closer, and another felow grabbed it and started looking at it. He said he had a Kimber but couldn't believe that Taurus was offering such a nice pistol for that kind of money. I have to agree. They got the finish right on the SS pistol-billboards and all.

Bud's price + dealer transfer fees or local dealer +TAX is on the order of $50 higher around me for the dealer. Seems like folks with lower tax and/or lower transfer fees may make out better either way. But for me it is just easier to pay a few more $s and get it local unless I can find a shop that has reasonable transfer fees that are not $30-50.

If you could have gotten a tactical for 450$...thats pretty good. Dealer isnt much less than that!

I think Id trust the SS version of the Taurus better than the blued version I played with. I wonder if they have a better fit?

Shoot well .........

I was thinking about picking up at PT1911 as a beater. Something to really learn the ins and outs of a 1911. I just bought a Kimber and I just end up staring at it most of the time afraid to move it!

Yeah, Jax, the Pt1911 cries out to be shot, carried, and used. Most of the Kimbers are too pretty for anything but range duty. If my pockets were a little deeper right now, I sure like that Raptor or whatever they call it.

Buy the Taurus and shoot the heck out of it thats what its made for. I have one with 5000+ Flawless rounds through it in just over a year. I bought my dad one shortly after I got mine and his has been 100% through over 4000 rounds. I would have gladly paid twice the 450 I paid for mine a year ago. For those who think you would be better of spending a lot more on a Colt think about this..The ex President of Colt now works for Taurus and he is the one who over saw the making of the Taurus 1911. If you are worried about selling it later dont be. I bought mine brand new for 450 out the door and one year later its hard to find them used for that price much less new. I know Ill be picking up a SS version with in the next month or so
