Thinking about getting a .22 mag bolt action rifle. I'm considering a Ruger 77 or CZ 452 Lux or American.

I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Steve

Of the choices presented:

CZ 452 Lux or American

costs 3-400 shoots like a $1000 rifle.

If you can handle both a marlin and a CZ and a ruger side by side you will see the light.

If you can find one in .22WMR http://www.eaacorp.com/firearms/rifles/targetrifles/biathlon_basic/table.shtml

The baiathalon basic will be more accurate than any of the other choices listed above, but it could be very difficult to find one since the word seems to be out (at least in my area).

The biathalon basic is not as attractive as the CZ.

I have one in .22lr and its the most accurate .22lr firearm I own
a month ago I was able to shoot several 5 shot .3" groups (edge to edge) at 50 yards with a simmons pro air scope.

The ammo it likes best so far Walmart 550 federal bulk pack $8.95 per 550 rounds.

I read about other folks who shoot groups this size but this is the first time I have been able to do so.

I have an 882SSV that has done a fine job for many years but the trigger is... on the unexceptional side. ;)

The CZs are very nice all around for the money. They'd get my vote.

Savage

All the rifles mentioned so far are very nice. Another option is the Savage 93. I have a 93GL (left hand bolt) and like it a lot. It needs a trigger job but other than that it's great.

I've been very pleased with my Savage/Anshutz. Last year it got 35 woodchucks and a fox. The fox was just over 100 yards away when it made it last mistake of stopping to look back.

The CZ 452 lux is great if like open sights, I think they have the best open sights of any rimfire. I had a Leupold 4X rimfire special on mine, it would shoot 1" at 100 yards with CCI's. I took it off just 'cause I like the sights so much and in the woods around here (MN) good open sights are what I like. Marlin Heavy barrels are very good also.

Easy. CZ Lux.

CZ makes the best rimfire bolt actions for the price now. And the "American" models just strip off the awesome tangent sights. Trust me those sights are AWESOME and negate the bullet's drop. There's absolutely no need for a scope with them, though of course it's easy to add one to the lux if you want.

Get what you like and what fits you.

I'm very happy with the CZ American WMR I stumbled across. It was just lke new, maybe a week old, and only $285 at a local shop with no box, papers or swivels. Apparently the original owner shot a varmint or two and traded it back in on a .223. (Maybe he didn't like the wood.)

I wasn't even thinking about a WMR, but what the heck the wood was pretty and the price was right. So far I've mostly shot Win Supremes and have no complaints at all with the accuracy. I have one of Brookie's trigger kit, but haven't gotten around to putting it in.

JohnBT,

Wow - that IS nice wood. What is a "brookie trigger kit"?

The trigger kit contains two sleeves to reduce creep and 4 springs to vary the pull weight. They are $14 in the U.S. and $15 worldwide. You can find the same stuff if you visit enough hardware stores and get lucky figuring out what you need, but he's already done all the work. He also has Weaver ring adapters and lots of tips and links to other sites with tips on tweeking the CZ rimfire.

The stock on my rifle is actually better than my so-so picture shows. I've seen pics of others that were similar - it's just luck of the draw in the wood lottery.
