I have the opportunity to buy a like new Ruger 77/22 with fixed 4X scope for $500 should I buy it? OR get a new CZ 455 LUX instead?

If those were my options that would be a tough choice and maybe not for the reasons you would think. I had a 77/22 for several years. I liked the looks, the feel and the engineering but even with a bit of tuning it only shot mediocre. Several other sporter weight, bolt 22's in the same price range that I also had would easily shoot groups half the size. I know some folks out there have 77/22's that are tack drivers but mine wasn't. My 77/22 hornet shoots sub moa groups at 100yrs but that is comparing apples and oranges. Recently I wrote in another post about how much I dislike the CZ 455 compared to the CZ 452/453's and why. I still don't like the 455 but if I HAD to bet on which one would shoot better I'd probably still bet on the CZ and besides it also will probably have a better trigger pull from the factory then the Ruger will. On the other hand the Ruger has a better scope mounting system and is going to be easier to mount a wide variety of scopes on than the CZ Luz because of the rear sight getting in the way. $500 dollars sounds a little step to me for a used 77/22 unless it has a really first class scope on it. I probably wouldn't by either to be honest but if those were my only choices I'd go for the CZ unless I could shoot the Ruger before I bought it to see how well it shot.

Tough choice. I'm not fimiliar with the 455 but do have a 452 Varmint that I love and it shoots GREAT! On the other hand I've always wanted a 77/22 and was just lusting over one on a used gun rack with a $ low/mid range 3x9 scope. They wanted $550 for it which I thought was steep, $400-450 I may had bit. For a sporter weight I've always liked the 77/22's...but that's just me.

CZ, although the Ruger is nice and I am a ruger fan the you'd have to spend 1k+ to get something better than a CZ.

Brett;

I've got a 77/22 and several 452's. Enough 452's that I feel no need to buy a 455. The largest reason I don't have more than one 77/22 though is that I can get CZ's configured for left hand use. The Ruger company apparantly hasn't figured out how easy it is to do mirror-image with CNC units and refuses to accomodate over 10% of the population.

If your shooting plans include areas where a scope would be beneficial, then by all means get the 77/22 if you're shooting off the right shoulder. If you're a lefty, just get a good used 452 American & scope that.

With any .22 rimfire though, you have to do the ammo testing in order to get the best accuracy the gun is capable of without changing barrels & expensive mods like that. I've found in the vast majority of cases, complaints about a .22's accuracy were directly linked to apathy about ammo testing. And this holds true with both CZ and Ruger.

The 77/22 trigger is not the best out of the factory. It only took about 10K rounds (OK- OK, there's some exaggeration there) for mine to smooth out. It is much easier and less expensive to correct a CZ's trigger than the Ruger's, thanks YoDave! OTOH, Ruger mags are much easier to get ahold of & about half price compared to the CZ's.

You pays yer nickle & you makes yer choice.
