Hello all,
I'm new to this site.
My father is looking for a revolver and I was hoping that someone here might have some recommendations. Here are the specifics and the intended use.

Caliber: .22 long rifle and .22 magnum (interchangeable cylinders?)
Finish: Blued
Action: Single Action
Manufacturer: None in particular
Barrel Length: 4" - 6" ?
(he doesn't want one that is too long - I have a 7.25" revolver and it can be rather unwieldy).
Sights: Solid front, Adjustable rear
(in my conversation with him it appears that he is talking about side to side adjustment (windage?) versus up and down (elevation?). He specifically said no scopes.

Full size frame/grip - a Bearcat frame/grip is too small.

He intends to carry this in a leather hip rig when he takes it out and about. He plans on using it for dispatching small, four legged pests at close range and for close range hunting of grouse (head & neck shots only).

Any ideas/links would be appreciated - Thank You.

I would say the Ruger Single Six, very reliable and solid for years of shooting. It has the interchangeable cylinder for .22 mag. Bought mine in 1979 and cant even think of how many hundreds of rounds I've put thru it, mine has the 6.5" barrel. The rear site is the standard micrometer setup that allows for windage and elevation which he will appreciate for sighting it in for himself.

The Single six would be my first choice. If you want to spend some serious dough, a Freedom arms would probably be a little bit better. For a cheap option, the Heritage Rough Rider works just fine at half the price of the Ruger, but the quality difference shows.

I own a convertible Single Six, and I love it. But there are other .22s out there. I really don't use the Magnum cylinder much, and question whether or not it is really worth it.

A 4" S&W Model 18 is going to be more accurate than a Single Six, and it will have a better single action trigger for shots on game.

If price is no object, find a Colt Diamondback .22 and go hunting with class.

I own both of those also, and they are sweet.

I'll pile on -- you described a Single Six to a tee. It fits all your requirements, and there are a zillion of them out there. Happy shopping!

I remember from the early seventies(?) that Colt made a "Frontier" model. Haven't seen one...even at the range in decades. Check gun broker.

It's Unanimous

Single Six Convertible-mine is stainless, but no matter-the Single Six will last for generations.Ruger got it right-no surorise there.

Colt New Frontier for single action. I just treated myself to a pair for Christmas - a 6" barrel and a 4 & 3/8" barrel. Found them at a local gun store on consignment. They were the holdings of a recently departed old gent whose daughter found them during clean out of his home. Both are like new and may not have been shot. I'm quite sure the .22mag cylinder was not.

She was looking for cash for Christmas. I bought both Colts plus a S&W Model 17-6 with a variable scope mounted that belonged to her dad for $1000. Smiles all around!

I used to have a single six, but the loading flap/gate broke :(. I sold it pretty cheap...man, I miss that thing.

Single Six is really a 22 Mag, with a .22lr cylinder.
The cylinder on mine, a new one, is .226" throats for the .22 cylinder.
The barrel is tight, less then .223" for a .22mag, not match grade for .22lr, and pretty much perfect for a .22 magnum.

Mine is stainless. I talked to Ruger and the SP 101 and Bearcat are the only Ruger revolvers with barrels for .22lr. Again, the .SSix is a .22 mag.

?

Thank You all for you input on my question - it is much appreciated.

btw - What does OP stand for?

Thanks again, jerm

Choices that I am aware of: Ruger Single Six, Heritage Rough Rider, USFA 22, old Colt Peacemaker/New Frontier. Of those... I'd skip the 22 mag part and get a Ruger Single Ten.

Single six is exactly what the OP described. I have one and love it. Great little revolver, I hardly ever use the .22 mag cyl though.

Single six. I have shot several heritage 22's and wouldn't recommend them for any purpose. Don't know about the eaa bounty hunter but I do know the single six is the way to go.

What about the Uberti Stallion, a SAA clone? A more authenic SAA than the Ruger. It doesn't have the lawyer inspired transfer-bar. And 10 shoots vs 6.
