I've been wanting a pump 410 for awhile, preferably a Remington Wingmaster 870. However, they are a bit pricey so I've been wondering about Mossberg. I would like to hear from you guys out there who may have had experience with both. I would be using it as a just-for-the-heck-of-it shotgun. Might shoot a few squirrels and rabbits. No quail around me, otherwise I'd try them too. Maybe a few rounds of trap or skeet and maybe a pigeon or two. Would appreciate your observations.

I bought an 870 Express years ago. I couldn't find a wingmaster but Wally had Express for $200. I carried it for quail over dogs for years. It was fun for my purposes, and enjoyable to carry. I also reload 2.5 inch shells for it.
I bought it because I was emulsifying birds with my 12 and 20 gauges. Make no mistake, if you aren't already a .410 shooter, it will be a significant handicap. The long, slender ammo doesn't lend itself to good patterns or function.
The 28ga is a far better sub-gauge fun gun, imho. My wife and kids shoot my 28 for backyard Clay's.
Ammo is really cheap to reload...and stoopid high to buy factory ammo for either .410 or 28ga..
My $.02.

I have the Mossberg. I'm happy with it for what it is. It doesn't have choke tubes, but for just about everything but very close range the .410 needs a full choke to get enough pattern density with only 1/2 oz of shot. I was originally going to buy the Browning BPS, but it is 2 lbs heavier. Mine has been a great shooter. It will feed any load without issue.

I also bought several Remington 870 expresses in 410 and 28 ga at Walmart at close out and I still have one of each 410 and 28 ga, I use the 28 ga for my walking rabbit shotgun at close out I bought two flats of win 1 oz # 6 high base shells, 80.00 a flat.

I have been very happy with my Mossberg 500 over the years, I bought it in 1985. I grew up using 410’s for all my small game hunting. My Mossberg has been very dependable and has had 1000’s of shells through it in the last 34 years.

A person can’t go wrong with either the Mossberg or Remington. It all depends on which one fits the shooter best and if they prefer a cross bolt safety or a tang safety. I prefer the Mossberg since I shoot lefthand.

I have a wingmater in 410 that was my first gun- 41 years ago. I really like it but can't afford to shoot it at doves, and everything else I would shoot at with a scattergun (turkey, deer, the occasional duck) requires more power. So my nice 870 hasn't been used since some time in the early 80's.

The best dove hunt I was ever on was a .410 only hunt. My good friend had a sunflower patch that he mowed down two days before the dove opener. It was crazy. They were practically landing on our guns. I doubt I will ever see it that good again. We all limited our in a couple hours.

My preference is and has been the 870 Wingmaster. I believe the 870 Express probably shoots just the same, but I'm partial to the finish of the Wingmaster. Looked at the Browning BPS which is nicely finished and functions well, but not that much less than the 870. Love the Winchester 42, but not enough to pay the price. The Mossberg is a good value; a hard working shotgun for not much money, but I still like the 870 Wingmaster. So.....thanks for the dialogue. It helped me clarify my choice. I'll renew my search for the Remington 870 Wingmaster 410......wish me luck.

I have a .410 Mossberg 500 that I use for a critter gun around the farm. It has performed well. I've even taken it out to the skeet field a time or two. I wish it had screw in chokes and some day I may send the barrel off to be modified.

The only other .410 shotguns I have are a Browning over/under and .410 tubes for my 12 ga skeet competition over/under.
