So currently I own a hi power 9mm that outshoots my 226 9mm by miles, at least for me it does. Ive been wanting to get into shooting 45acp for a while now and am considering trading in my 226 for a nice 45acp, the problem is I like too many. Currently Im looking at various 1911s, the hk usp series both full size and compact, and the fnp45.

what do yall think? any other suggestions?

thanks
Ian

btw still gonna get another sig one day but this time in .357sig

If you are not brand loyal, RIA 1911 Tactical and Sig 1911 XO have both outshot most 1911s under $1000 on my last year's pursuit for a 1911.

After range testing various 1911s, I ended up getting a railed Sig 1911 TacPac and a friend bought a RIA Tactical and both will shoot quarter sized shot groups at 10-15 yards off hand and 1.5-2" at 25 yards off sand bags.

My experience between the P-35 and the 226 have been just the opposite, but then I spent a lot more time with my 226 as it was my duty gun.

If you're thinking of something other than a 1911, I'd recommend a H&K HK45, which was an update on the USP...the HK45 has excellent ergos. I've personally found the SIG 220 a good alternative to the 1911, with its excellent trigger and accuracy. If you don't mind the weight of the 1911, the SIG 220ST (stainless frame) is a good alternative.

In a mid-priced 1911, I think the Dan Wessons and STI Trojan are excellent values

9mmepiphany, actually Dan Wesson and STI would have been my choices, had I not lived in California.

I tried to buy a Dan Wesson PM7, one of like 100-200 made each year only for California but missed out on the opportunity and STI Trojan/Spartan are not for sale in California unless I go through the single-shot exemption process.

I too would select P226 over Hi Power (I would choose CZ75 over Hi Power too having shot all three) but as OP posted, being able to shoot a pistol accurately is sometimes a personal thing.

+1 on HK. I have the HK45C and it's been very reliable. You can carry cocked and locked, or decock and carry DA first shot.

I currently have three 45ACP pistols: Para-Ordnance, Kimber, and Glock 30sf.

All three have shown extreme reliability.

The Para and the Kimber will each put 8 rounds into a ragged half-dollar sized hole at 15 yards.

The Para is heavy on the hip with a full mag.

The Kimber and the Glock both carry as if the holster was empty.

The Para trigger is The Best production trigger I've ever felt (and every friend who's shot it agrees on that! Was is 'luck of the draw?)

Simply put, the Glock holds 10 rounds, and offers one less action to remember when presenting the weapon.

The Glock is less susceptible to the harsh high desert environment of my ranch. As such, its a better choice for me to have on my hip when I am prospecting or exploring the high lonesome.

There are so many great options these days for the .45 acp.
A good 1911 is hard to beat. I own the sig sauer c3 1911 and have been really pleased with it. Its a mid tier 1911 and its been a fun shooting reliable gun. So any mid tier and up 1911 should soot you quite well.
The hk usp series of guns are also nice pistols. My usp 45 had some hang ups and I gave up on it rather quickly but none the less the usp's are quality pistols.
The xdm 45 is also a nice option. To me it has the best ergonomics of any polymer .45. Its more than accurate and has quite a lot of fire power coming in at 13+1. Mine has not had a failure of any kind.
Lastly you may want to check into the glock 30. For its: size, accuracy, and fire power its a tough pistol to beat. Its also super reliable.

Shop around and go to next big show in your area. My last purchase was boxed S&W 99 .45 with papers two extra mags and 3 extra back straps for $400. There are many pics in that price range on second-hand market especially in USA where guns are dime a dozen. For civilian use the S&W 99 is in no way worse then Glock 21 or SIG 220.

I love 45's and have a kimber CC, glock 21 and 36 and also a FN FNP-45. If i could only have one it'd be the Kimber but if i didn't have any of them and were in your situation I'd get the FN FNP-45 without a doubt. Its easily my favorite polymer pistol I've owned/handled. I put a hk USP 45 compact tactical on layaway thinking I'd love it until I rented one and it turned out I didn't like the trigger at all and hated the mag release. I guess i could learn how to use it better but i decided to take it off Layaway and order another kimber. Long story short, I suggest the FN FNP-45.

It's a hobby. Be happy. I'd pass on the USP having owned them. A 1911 is a very nice flavor of .45acp.
