thinking about another gun: .40SW or another .45?

I look at it this way...
You're already equipped with a 9mm and a .45 and presumably have some ammo stashed for both. Introducing a .40 into the mix complicates your logistics. The .40 is a real fine caliber, but I'm in the same boat as you: I owned a 9mm and a .45, so when I went looking for some "updated" pistols, I decided I'd stay with the cartridges I already had on hand. I've never regretted that decision.

i have an XD40 AND AN XD45 both are great guns, the only reason i have the 40 is i have a few thousand rounds for it.
my main guns are in 45 acp .
but the 40 is still a good round

Get another 45. I consolidated my collection more than a decade ago by selling or trading off my 40's & haven't missed them!
Like you I like the .45. I personally don't see a need for having a .40. Any gun that chambers it can be had in either .45 or 9 mm and anything the .40 can do for you one of these can. If you want high cap go 9 if you want large bullet go .45 or you can compromise and go larger than 9 bullet and more that .45 capacity and get the .40. Like you I have .45's and 9's and just don't see the need to add another auto cartridge to my collection. On top of all of that the .40 cost more to shoot especially if you don't reload, which I don't. So that's my opinion.

Agreed..... another 45, why bring another size in, it just makes more work keeping up with and buying a different ammo.
I prefer .45 A.C.P. for higher performance at lower pressure (than that of the .40 S.W.), but if you are looking at Sig and H.K., I don't think you can go wrong in either caliber. I agree with the virtues of simplicity, but if I really believed that, I could probably get by with just have one 9mm I'm excusively 45/9/22 A.T.M., but am looking hard at an H.K. in .40 S.W. just because complexity can be fun.
And that's a great deal on the C.P.O, but you can always just get a factory N.I.B. P226 with night sights for $600 deliverd (if you don't need a rail). Would be close depending on taxes vs what you can get transfers for. I like new, but those C.P.O.'s are like new anyways. Y.M.M.V.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot: "The .40 S.W. is the answer to a question that was never asked!
"Stick with .45. I also at one time had lots of handgun calibers - 9, , 45, .40. ,380. 9x18 . . . I saw no value in it and decide to stick with a few, sold my .40 and all .40 ammo. The .45 is ubiquitous (as is the 9) and you'll have enough in common with military and many police that there's nothing to be gained, other than a loss of shelf space.

But now here's the dangerous part. Now that I own a .40, and have a couple of boxes of ammo sitting in the safe, guess what? That's right, the new Springfield XDm is calling my name!
Like you, my whole gun collection was either in 9mm, 357Mag, and 45ACP. Then I found a Browning High Power Practical that I could not say no to in .40. It followed me home - wasn't my fault!

I personally feel that the .40 is the best round on the market. Of course there are people that disagree as with anything. But to me it is a matter of .45 stopping power with more rounds. I personally own more .45s and 9mms than .40s but this is just because of the guns I have happened to get not because of the .40 round. In fact my normal carry gun right now is a Glock 23.

The .40 S&W is my personal favorite for bottom feeders. However I do agree with other folks who say if you already have 9mm and .45 then you may or may not want to add another caliber to the mix.
I've been headed in the opposite direction, pruning down my caliber list and setting up "pairs" of pistols and carbines that use the same caliber.

I am mostly getting away from .40, only because it costs the same to load as .45 and I like the .45 better. It is a great little caliber. I still have my XD SC in .40 and really like it. I did buy a 9MM conversion barrel and mag for it though.
I have a CZ 75B and a 1911. I also own a 686 revolver. I thought about
