Which 9mm & which .22 pistol?

Well, truthfully, it is all about your personal feel. When it comes down to it, Ruger and Browning, in my opinion, hold the market on .22s. For the money you will get a shooter that will far outlive you, will be beautiful, and accurate.

Well, mine sure shoots good! $275 for this rig, scope and all.

I've always loved the Lugeresque grip angle of the Mk Rugers. Man, feels nice in the hand. :D I'm not really into the 22/45, but it's an option for the 1911 lovers if you don't like the angled grip frames of the older style guns.

I've owned both the Ruger and Browning Buckmark. Don't have the Ruger any more but have 2 Brownings, a standard Field and a Target version I use for Bullseye. The Ruger is a fine pistol but I liked the Buckmark more.

I own a variety of 9mm's. The Glock 19 would be the last one I'd get rid of as IMO its the best gun for self defense carry that has a combination of "right" size (not too big and not to small), along with good power, extreem reliability, and round capacity. Its not the nicest pistol but its the most useful.

For a range gun there's a lot of good ones out there. You can't go wrong with a Beretta, Sig, Browning, HK, FN, or CZ. For a better price point the S&W 5906 used, the Taurus PT92 or one of their 24/7's

For the .22 if you want a really nice gun, find a used Colt Woodsman. Barring that, I own several Ruger MKlls and they are nice. I like the stainless bull barrel (kmk512). I also like the Ruger Single Six but it's a single action.
As far as the 9mm, I can recommend the Glock 19, the CZ75 or the BHP.
I've heard good things about the Springfield XD and the S&W M&P also but I have no experience with them.

That's an easy question, I'd go with the Springfield EMP and

a Ruger Mark II. I picked this one up with a holster for $200.

Magic Man -
As always, try before you buy! Rent or borrow a variety to see which you like best.

That being said, I love my Browning HiPower but its the 9mm Kahr K9 that goes everywhere that I go. Both are excellent guns!

As for a .22, I love my Colt Peacemakers and my Smith M34 and M63 (J frames) as well as the M18 (K frame).

All are outstanding guns!

Seperate guns is the way to go, none of the kits that fit later are as accurate as that little Ruger.

I shoot a Glock mdl 17 L and std slide also have an AA 22 Kit that is nice but it won't hold the group that Rugar will.

:)

My .22 pistol is a stainless heavy barrel Ruger 22/45. I had to put a "good" extractor in it and now it'll eat most anything. Originally Stingers were the only thing reliable.

I've always wanted a CZ75. I have an Airsoft version that feels dreamy!

I OWN Astra A80 and S&W 469 however.

I also had a Buck a long time ago. It was a good quality gun, but the value of a Ruger is not only in its accuracy, but in the fact that it was the first .22 auto that was made to last several lifetimes. I had a nice little Smith 41 that a friend hounded me out of...had a nice front sight that would extend out in front of the muzzle for added sight radius. It was a very nice gun, too, but it wasn't in the Ruger's ball park for longevity. In fact, the Rugers were very popular in South Africa and Rhodesia back when government sactions were in effect against those countries. The reason was that spare parts were rarely, if ever, needed. Ruger builds their parts oversize and the little automatics just couldn't be beat...literally. They're the Energizer Bunny of the .22LR gun world.

I also have to say that I love my Ruger Single-Six. Both are outstanding. But again, each person brings their own preferences, so advice will be as different as shooters.

Let me know where I can pick up an EMP for $400 and I'll take a dozen.:neener:

Any opinions on the Kel-Tec P-11?

I would try like the dickens to shoot this one before you buy. It fits my hand to where it just kills my thumb between the two joints when I shoot it. I can't seem to find a comfortable way to hold it. I'm still pretty accurate with it, though.

That's a rather low budget. If you're looking for new guns, I like something reliable for my 9mm (assuming it will be used for protection) and a "fun" .22lr (assuming that will be a practice/range gun).

I own all the guns I recommend.

Overbudget Choice:
-9mm Glock (G19 for day-to-day concealment/any-purpose; G17 for range gun/occasional concealment/any-purpose)
-.22lr Walter P22 or CZ Kadet (full-pistol version, non conversion version of Kadet Kit converted CZ-75, see below)

Budget Choice:
-9mm CZ-75 (SP101 is the same size as larger Glock, the G17; P01(?) is the G19-size version (not sure?))
-.22lr CZ Kadet conversion kit - you replace the slide on you CZ-75 and in under a minute you have a .22lr handgun with similar ergonomics to your carry-gun

CZ-75 (SP-01)
-larger, great balance, heavier, has a hammer/regular safety but can also be bought with de-cocker
-night sights, more gun for less money
CZ-75 P-01 (whatever their carry CZ-75 is)
-don't own it and thus don't know enough to comment
CZ-75 Kadet Conversion Kit
-comes with a new slide, new magazines
-must file a little off the slide to make it fit properly (this is normal)
-feels like your carry 9mm CZ-75
CZ-75 plus Kadet Kit Conversion is right around your budget ($800)

Walter P22
-less reliable than Kadet Kit, needs more cleaning, more close-tolerance moving parts, it seems
-lighter, smaller, but great ergonomics - a great gun to hold and despite being small the sight radius is good and it still feels/looks sort of like a smaller semi-auto
-comes with threaded barrel for the .22lr suppressor

Glocks
-both ultra-reliable, AK-47-like ease-of-cleaning (you will damage it more by cleaning every trip than leaving it alone for hundreds upon hundreds of rounds)
-G19 can be a daily-carry gun even with a t-shirt, etc; nice and light
-G17 is nice, heavier, good as a range gun like the CZ-75 SP101
-G17 is a little big to conceal (like the CZ-75 SP101) but do-able
-no manual safety (neither on the de-cocker CZ-75) so you have to keep your finger out of the trigger-guard, and don't try to catch it when you drop it
-CZ has a manual safety which is nice for light trigger pull, but really offers no more advantage than peace-of-mind for those who (for better or for worse) don't quite trust themselves

(prices are off the top of my head, ballparked)
CZ-75 SP01 - ~$550

CZ Kadet Kit Conversion ($300) (?)
Glock 17/Glock 19 - ~$600 (G19 in picture)

I absolutely LOVE mine. I can put a couple hundred through it in a session no problem, pussycat. +P stuff kicks a little, but WWB is nothin', but budda. :D But, a lot of folks don't like the trigger. I do, for pocket carry, very safe, very smooth, very easy to shoot accurately once you master it.

For a range gun, in 9mm, I'd pick a bigger gun, a DA gun. But, for carry, for me, it don't get no better than the P11. It's light, small, accurate, ready to go DA, no safeties, and with high firepower in a service caliber. It's small, but it ain't no mouse gun.

Another for the CZ75 and the Kadet conversion unit.

A few years ago, at a local gun show, I found a CZ Kadet unit on a CZ85 frame that the vendor was selling for 20% off the marked price. To say that I scarfed that rascal up in a flat second is an understatement. I still feel like I stole it! Now I'm looking for one of the FirePoint sights to put on the unit (just for the, well you know, because I can).

Walther

I shoot both a WALTHER P-99 in 9m.m. and a P-22 in .22lr.

I also like the BERETTA 92 Centurion with the old Belgium made BROWNING Challenger.

I held a Taurus 24/7, Glock 17 & Glock 19 today. The 19 was too bulky, the 24/7 felt ok & the 17 felt pretty good in my hand.

I have a P-11, compact reliable, lousy trigger but it goes bang everytime. But then again all DAO pistols have lousy triggers...

If the intent is to have an economical to shoot practice pistol that is similar to your main item this works well and is very cost effective.

A friend and I both use Sig P228s. We have got ourselves a backlog of wives and relatives wanting to learn to shoot. Up until now we have been using my wood-gripped Walther PPK 22 as an introductory firearm but I am getting a bit concerned about the number of rounds and the general wear and tear that is being caused on the Walther.

We will be recommending that the new shooters buy some version of the Sig 9mm so I bought a Mosquito to replace the Walther for basic training.

So far this has worked well. The Mosquito is very close in operation to the full-size pistols and it has a size and weight that makes it feel more like the real thing. Trigger is not great but despite this accuracy is good. Of the first 20 rounds I put through the pistol from 7 yards 10 could be covered by a quarter.

A Sig P6 and the Mosquito will cost about $550. My problem is talking my daughter out of choosing the Mosquito as a SD gun as she likes it so much.

I have equal love for my PT 92 and my CZ 75. My M&P 9mm Compact and it's full size version will work it's way up to the top. Being a USAR officer, I have carried the M9 for a long time but I always long for days of my 1911 GI .45.
