Which AK-47 for first time AK owner?

You can find factory fresh unaltered single stack WASR-10s for less than $250 (and $250 is on the expensive end).

I'm very curious to where these can be found.

Saigas are about the cheapest, until you price out the hi cap mags, since they won't use standard ones without some mods done.

And the Saiga rifles couldn't legally use mags over 10 rds without some 922(r) compliance mods anyway, at least if you take the more cautious view of how 922(r) applies.

Depending on the area of the country you live in, some retailers put factory new single stack wasr-10s on sale periodically for $199 . . .

My vote is for the Yugo M70! I owned one and it was a quality rifle and a great shooter. The thicker receiver gives the rifle a solid feel. Also I don't think a chrome lined barrel is an absolute must.

This rifle is a big step above the WASR.

If you can find one for around $500 it's a good buy.

I don't know exactly if this is what you want, but I got mine from arizona response systems and it was exactly what I wanted in my first one. I mean it was all "guaranteed" to fit and function correctly. from reading all these posts I felt that I wanted something that was built and tested by a small outfit that has a mans name on it rather than a slightly cheaper and larger company (of which every one has its horror stories posted here).

I think it was $550.

I figured that since I was happy with my first time AK purchase I would give 'em some free advertising.

No matter what you pick, I think as long as you don't get screwed, you will love it,

Does a wasr have any real difference from normal ak's.
Only in that it doesn't have a 'fun switch' and is cosmetically different.

They are functionally identical to all other Kalashnikov sporting rifles sold here in the USA.

How can I tell if a WASR is factory unaltered or not and how do you know if the ones Impact sells are altered?

If it takes a proprietary 10 round single-stack magazine, it should be factory fresh.

Why is everyone talking about price?

The original post didn't say anything about price. So for a good AK-type rifle I would go with a Tromix, Krebs, Red Stick, etc. modified Saiga.

My first AK was a VEPR K and I'm very glad I went that route.

The ones from AZ response system or well worth the money they are now about 600 plus shipping.
