I'm really interested in getting an AK-47 but I am having a problem finding the best, most reliable one to focus on. I had my eye on a really nice Krebs custom but my FFL sold it before I was able to latch onto it. What should I look for in terms of quality? How about the Aresenal models? I'd like something chambered in 7.62X39...

Some say Krebs others say Arsenal. They both seem to be nice. I haven't tried either but have had good experience with milsurp.

The Romanian guns are a little rough but they shoot well. The Chinese rifles are very nice and also great shooters; the Polytech Legend is really nice but way too expensive, you can get an MAK90 for about $400 give or take $50. If you need it to be a pistol grip you can add some American parts and it will be legal to change from the thumbhole. I've handled a few Hungarians and they very high quality. I don't have any experience with the Yugos and I hear the Bulgarian AKs are really good. There are supposed to be some nice egyptian rifles out there but I don't know much about them.

What happened? Guns used to be works of art, not stamped sheet metal.
Modern art. :D

Actually, I really like the aesthetics of AK lookalikes (and AR's); Ruger No. 1's and such are fine examples of craftsmanship, but if you back up and look at it from a distance, the AK looks better to me. Of course, I'm a Gen-X'er, and I think a Subaru WRX or a Mitsubishi Evolution looks better than a '69 Chevelle, too.

Saddam had an actual AKM gold-plated and engraved...that's probably carrying it a bit far...

Works of art are great if you can afford them, but that is not necessary for reliable function and decent accuracy.

Do a search, this has been asked many times.

For performance I like Veprs (when you can actually get them) and converted Saigas. The Saigas are almost as accurate as the Veprs, but weigh 2 pounds more. If I want traditional looks I get a Vector. Those satisfy most of my AK needs.

I sell a lot of AKs. I've used various Bulgys, and they are good, but for the money I would get the Saiga and have it customized to my specs.

imas: What about the milled AK's? You like those?

I knew that was the next one to show up, a throw away 45acp. Yes, I like milled (machined) weapons. I was up in PA. last week and saw a sale on an AK. Bulgarian with a LONG magazine, 30 rd? For $350. Good Deal? I didnt know they made machined AKs. Just showing my ignorance. I watched the discovery channel when they had the interview with the guy who designed it. He was under some pressure to come up with something that worked! Anyway, if anything, it has to be one heck of a fun toy to play with!

The Bulgys are supposed to be nice. I think that is a good price. I want to say $500 is average? Not real sure.
