I just bought a M-7 Bayonet ( Conetta mfg ) and want to put in on a 16 Ar-15 upper. ( I have a complete lower, no top half yet ) I think the original Car 15/M4 barrells are actually like 11.5 or something like that? Anyways i know when I see a CAR 15 style upper with a 16 barrel it just some how doesn't look right to me.

My concern is that if I got one of those, the ring right at the front of the hilt that is supported by the flash hider would slide right over it and not be supported by te barrel.

The Mid length uppers look more like they are proportioned right, would that be a proper fit or do I need to get one of the 11.5 in uppers with a pinned on 5 in flash hider for the bayo to work on it?

Thanks

16" middy works perfectly with a bayonet. Shoots much better and more reliably than a shorter carbine too.

The 16" with carbine length gas will not work. You need either a 14.5" barrel with carbine length gas, 16" barrel with mid length gas, or 20" barrel with rifle length gas. All of those have the same barrel length after gas port as the military issue rifles that the bayonet is designed for.

Nugilum, My uncle gave me one of those in the late 80s but when i found a new job 4 yrs later he made me give it back.....

You'll need to make sure that there's a bayonet lug before you put a bayo on anything. The pickings might be slim with M4gery style guns, as the Army doesn't even teach or issue the bayonet anymore. Also, pencil thin barrels are not good things to mount knives on, especially when they get hot. I'd recommend an average to heavier 20" barrel.

Yeah -- just make sure you're got a bayonet lug on the upper and don't have an non-USGI flash hider or brake on it (some probably will work fine with a bayonet, but an M16A2 or A1 suppressor will definitely fit).

Or unless you're interested in a totally period appropriate upper that goes with the M7 bayonet, in which case google "retro AR-15s" and get ready to do some reading . . .

I wish some one still made "retro" ARs instead I am going for the CAR 15 look. I think a "Middy" will do just fine for me.

In my opinion, the sillest peice of equipment for a short barreled rifle (even 20 inches) For a M1 or SKS it will work, but an AR or AK (LOL), carry more ammo and a good hunting knife. It would be more effective tied to a long pole and used as a lance.
