Just got a new/first rifle, a Steyr MIII Professional in .270. It shot well, but at the range I'm at there are not very good rests available. am thinking of putting a bipod on it. Is Harris the way to go? I was thinking the 6-9 inch variety, but I see there is a standard and a lightweight version...any experience with either, or is there a better option out there?

i will primarily be shooting from a benchrest or prone.
cheers,
derek

Go with the Harris BRMS model. It is the Benchrest (BR 6"-9"), notched log (M), swivel (S) model. I don't know about a standard and lightweight model. The only variations I know of are the heights, 1A vs M models, and the S and non-S models.

The 1A uses the original legs with no notches. The M models have notches every 1/2" or so, making it easier to adjust height quickly. The S models are swiveling, allowing you to cant the rifle appropriately if the surface the bipod is sitting on is not level.

I actually have both the BRM and BRMS versions. If you get the BRMS, I recommend you get the Podloc (I bought mine from Brownells). The Podloc is a lever you add to the S versions of the Harris Bipods which allow for quick adjustment of the swivel mechanism. This is much better than trying to adjust the factory nut with your fingers while in the prone position.

I have been impossibly happy with my Versa-Pod. Its the one that's a knockoff of the Parker-Hale. I went ahead and got the custom stud, and mounted it to the front of the stock. This involves drilling and stuff, but made it very, very close to the bore.

Hmm. I seem to be incapable of enclosing a photo of my installation. Have to go shopping with the wife now, but will try it again later.
