Which Buckshot for HD?

In several balistics gel experiments, it was learned that #1 shot had the deepest penetration of all rounds tried, including all the 'famous' 0, 00, and 000 buckshot rounds. You may take that for what it's worth. It totally depends on the range, the backstop and the target.

00 buckshot isn't going to let you down if you use it for HD. I mean... have you seen what it will do to a deer?

#1 may have the right combination of speed and mass to get the deepest penetration. #4 may be "safest," since it's the smallest buckshot and the least likey to overpenetrate walls. 00 is still the most often recommended, because it was a very common size of buckshot used by police in their patrol shotguns.

Police departments are issuing fewer and fewer shotguns these days. I don't know if that's for budgetary reasons or some political reason. All I do know is that if I invade your home and you shoot me with a well-placed load of anything from #4 through 00 buckshot, I'm going to wish I had invaded a different house.

In most home defense situations you'd be within 50' anyway, wouldn't anything larger than # 7 1/2 work?

I've got some #4 1 1/4 oz loads that chronograph about 1550 fps in a 12 gauge I loaded for turkeys.

High velocity turkey loads will certainly ruin somebody's day. We could talk all month about which shotgun loads are or aren't appropriate for HD. I suspect that nobody will be pleased with his or her own choice without doing some personal testing on gel, building materials, watermelons, phone books, raw meat, or whatever would sufficiently satisfy his or her curiousity.

At 15 yards or less a typical shotgun shell won't even hardly start opening up anyway, plus shot won't penetrate through walls and travel through to the neighbors house like buckshot will.

We tested some turkey loads on a side of Beef and at 15-25 feet with a Mod Choke it made some nasty Orange sized holes. It was Federal buffered #4 copper plated 12 gauge 2 and 3/4 . Dont remember the drams it was about 10 years ago that we did this .

buck shot for home defence

Here in the uk, we can't keep a firearm for home defence. However, i am part of a scheme where trained individuals are called out from home to dispatch injured animals at the roadside. This happens quite a lot so i keep my shotgun out of the cabinet and fairly close to hand should i get called.......

I use express buffalo sg cartridges i think they have 9 pieces of shot. I have shot plenty of deer at close range with them and they are truly awesome.

Some years ago i worked in some dangerous jungles. The average range for engagements was about 10 yards. the guys i worked with were very specialised. (i wasn't ... i won't try and tell you i was! i was the comms guy!). These guys were able to choose what they used. most chose remmy wingmasters with 18 inch barrels and SG shot. When i asked why they explained it was very like hitting the enemy with a 9mm pistol 9 times all at once. when they were hit..... they stayed hit.

So i would say that SG would give anyone the good news. but really at 20 yards a birdshot #6 would be quite messy.

I got a piece of advice for you:

Try not to use 3" Express Magnum 00 Buck in SD...
