Looking at getting a Kel-Tec P3AT or the Ruger LCP. New job requires more concealment in lighter clothing.

Although I want an LCP, I had to vote keltec at this point in time. The LCP is a better feel but the keltec has such a good backing and a tried and trusted action. The LCP has not been around long enough for me to trust it fully. I personally would rather own he ruger for the better ergonomics, name, and design (i know, they are almost twins, but there are differences). I have yet to talk to a true keltec owner who does not love it.

The op is asking about .380's. If thats what he wants, your choice does not matter. Just some food for thought...

Hi my name is Soybomb.

If I had to pick one, I'd go with the keltec because I feel like its the same gun and ruger is doing some of the same things keltec did earlier in the days of the p3at before they discovered problems with them and changed a few things.

I also would rather have a .38SPC or .357 MAG but I need something extremely compact

I'd go for a major caliber like a 38/357 snubbie or Kahr 9/40/45.
Although if you know of a .357 mag or .38 spc that is equally compact clue me in please:)

I'd go with Kel tec. Customer service is great. THey will fix anything that might happen to the pistol. I just sent mine in a few months ago and they practically sent me a new pistol free of cost!!! Works like a dream now. (I had bought it second hand and was in all likely hood, abused by the previous owner) My wife carries this little pistol and I use it occasionally as well. As far as the Ruger goes, I gotta really think twice about buying something from a company that basically ripped off another company's design.:scrutiny:

So my next question is how tough are those little pistols I dont want to worry about it breaking if its dropped, smashed, kicked etc...

Man if I had to boycott every manufacturer that ever ripped off other designs, I wouldn't have very many choices (I do respect your principles though)! Only reason I'd hesitate on the L.C.P. (or Kahr P380 F.T.M.) is maybe how new they are.

KT's have had the time to de-bug it. untill ruger is time proven i vote KT.

drop a KT....they float like a butterfly

Hey Ronstar,

My wife and I were just looking at this exact pair the other day for her a CCW pistol. The main difference between the two is that the Ruger has a slide lock where the Keltec doesnt. One other thing that was told me at my small local shop was that Ruger is selling the LCPs so fast that they arent offereng extra mags until the supply for the pistol slows down enough to allow them to mass produce them easier.

My wife ended up going with a Beretta Tomcat but it was a close run between these two. She went with the Tomcat because of the steel construction, it was the only one that didnt feel like a cheap plastic toy in her hands.

As for the durability of these two, I dont know. We looked at them for a few minutes and talked with the shop clerk who was fairly knowledgeable but ended up going with a gun that is made from metal because of the durability issue. If you dont mind going down to a 32 you might look into the Beretta. It is a nice gun so far. My wife loves it.

The ruger and Kel-tec are almost the exact same size, to me it really comes down to preference. If you want a slide lock and no extra mags you can go with the ruger or the tried and true kel-tec. I am a huge ruger fan but would probably go with the kel-tec atleast till extra mags are available for the ruger.

The beretta is .2 inches shorter and just slightly wider than the ruger and kel-tec. All three are comprable to the same size and are all easily concealed.

The beretta is not a hammerless pistol though. It does have a manual safety and can be carried cocked and locked if you have to. It has a flip up barell so that a round can be chambered immediately because until the pistol has been fired a couple hundred times the slide is very stiff, I didnt have much problem with it but my wife did. most guys wont have a problem working the slide even in a hurry.

Then he should have stated that he was just looking at .380 Auto pistols and not have had an option for "other" and perhaps stated something to the effect of "I'm looking for .380 Auto only". Chew on that for a while.

Although if you know of a .357 mag or .38 spc that is equally compact clue me in please
I don't think a snubbie or even a Kahr is as small as the little .380s, but still fits the bill for pocket carry.

Since my opinion is not welcomed, I'm out.

Look around and try to get all three side by side at a gun shop or gun rental for comparrison so that you know what you are getting. Thats the way my wife and I did it. She loved the extra weight to the beretta and the solid construction of it.

The beretta isnt for everyone and if you are looking for a DAO pistol it might not be for you unless you dont mind carrying it cocked and locked or with a round in the chamber and the hammer down.

If you feel you must buy a Kel-Tec, at least get one of their 9mm's. ;)

"Anything distinctly smaller—such as the .380 Auto pistol caliber, which is literally a "9mm Short"—too often fails to make the cut. I've run across shooting after shooting where the defender shot a violent aggressor with a .380 and did little to immediately stop his depredations. A good hollow point load in 9mm or .38 Special will, historically, end lethal assaults more quickly."

at the risk of seeming smug,if you don't know what to carry in a job that needs more concealment, maybe you should think about taking it at all.
