Hey folks,

I'm curious what large companies/conglomerates own and operate the various gun-related companies that we see every day.

For example, I know that Alliant Techsystems (ATK) owns Federal, Speer, CCI, RCBS, Alliant Powder, and a few other big-name brands.

Olin Corporation owns the brand of Winchester ammunition and manufactures all their ammunition, but licensed the brand of guns to the US Repeating Arms Company, who in turn is owned by FN Herstal.

Hodgdon and IMR powders are now merged, though I have a nagging suspicon that they're also part of the same company as Alliant Powder. I think they might also be owned by ATK as well, but am not 100% sure.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? What about other companies like Hornady, Starline, Remington, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Lee reloading equipment, Unique powder, etc.?

My reason for asking is twofold:
1) I'm simply curious who owns what.
-and-
2) I'm mildly concerned with the continuing trend of acquisions and mergers in many industries. While companies may benefit from economies of scale by consolidating their manufacturing and making things more efficient, I am concerned with the possibility of a single or relatively few number of points of failure.

Take, for example, the recent announcement of the BP pipeline in Alaska. One company runs that pipeline, and it's shutdown will likely have a massive effect on shipments of oil to East Asia and the Western US/Canada. Some redundancy in the market is a good think, and a different company could have picked up the slack (or at least mitigated the severity of it somewhat).

I occasionally ponder what would happen if, for some reason, ATK decided that they were no longer going to manufacture consumer products (and instead focus on government contracts) or were sued or otherwise prevented from making gun-related stuff. No Federal, CCI, or Speer ammo or components like primers and bullets. No RCBS reloading gear. No (if I'm right, and again, I'm not sure I am) IMR, Hodgdon, or Alliant powders. That would take a large chunk of US ammo and gun-related products out of the market.

That sounds rather apocolyptic, but it's not my intent, really. I'm mostly just curious about who owns what.

Anyone know?

Cheers!
