I'm thinking about getting one. What are the pro's and cons of the different models, Whitneyville through 3rd? I understand they made improvements each time, but I have no idea what they are from model to model.

Thanks.

Whitneyville and 1st model have oval stop notches on the cylinder.
Whineyville has the Walker grip.
1st and second have the Dragoon (square back) trigger guard.
3rd has the round trigger guard.

What's the difference between the Walker and 2/3rd Model grip? I assume size, but is it angle as well?

Do you have a preference for one over the others?

The Walker/Whitneyville is more trumpet shaped at the bottom (an evolution from patterson). The frame is actually different where the wood meets up to it. The Walker style is semi circular at the frame and the Dragoon (1st, 2nd and 3rd) is squre lkie late Colts.

The most noticeable difference between the Dragoon series and Walker is that the cylinder was shortened because too many (maybe most) of the Walkers burst cylinders because the powder charge was more then the steel of that day could safely hold. This isn't a problem today, but lifting and shooting a Walker is to say the least, a chore. But if you want the biggest, badest Colt ever made the Walker is it.

Sorry I assumed the OP knew that!
He asked the difference between the Dragoon types not the Dragoon and the Walker.

You can "fit" the Walker cylinder into the Dragoon....if you want the power in the smaller package. I have done it for a number of my customers!

I guess my question is: why would I choose model X over model Y?

and that would be the second post.

since i already have a Walker, id pick the 3rd model for the differences in grip, trigger guard etc.

With respect to the Dragoons, there's no significant practical (ie, shooting) reason to pick one over the other. Some folks prefer the oval trigger guard over the square, and some don't. That's probably the biggest issue.

I appreciate the answers. I guess I would have thought there was more of a difference in its evolution. Thanks everyone.

I would get the 2nd or 3rd model as they have the more modern cylinder stops rather than the oval ones of the Walker that have no lead in. The lockup is going to hold up better with less battering of the edges of the cylinder stop cutouts.

I have two Walkers and the stops get banged up and you can get over rotation after a while. I also have a 3rd Mod Dragoon.

That was my thinking. After that, I decided on a 2nd because I wanted the square-back trigger guard of the earlier models.

Current standard production Uberti civilian 3d Models (which most sellers carry in stock) don't have the rear sight. You'd have to find one cut for shoulder stock.

The ORIGINAL Dragoons had differences that aren't present in the modern repro's.
In addition to what was previously mentioned, Whitneyville and First Models had no roller on the hammer and had a Vee-shaped mainspring. Some time after the very first run of Seconds, the design change shifted to a single-piece mainspring and roller (wheel) on the hammer. Third models incorporated all of the above, plus the rounded trigger guard. Back then, the third would have been the obvious choice.
Now, with the modern repros incorporating all but the bolt notches and trigger guard, it's a matter of which one you like the looks and feel of.

I settled on the 2nd Model and ordered it today. I like the squareback look. I appreciate all the help and input.

Had they been on sale at the time I would have gotten a 2nd mod as the square TG looks distinguishing.

Cowboy you will be happy with it. Since you already have a Walker you know what you are getting yourself into.

I was flipping through the channels on TV a few minutes ago and stopped at a scene in Last Man Standing. In the scene William Sanderson was holding a Dragoon on someone and then shot him for the fun of it.

Here's mine. A Franken Dragoon. This is the Whitneyville Dragoon, with a 2nd/3rd Model cylinder fitted. My original cylinder notches were too shallow, and the cylinder stop did not, well, stop the cylinder on two chambers. Made a mess of cylinder notches too. SO, I ordered a later model cylinder and cylinder stop and fitted them to the gun. Just finished it a while ago. Functions flawlessly now. ;)
