I figger Rugers are probably the most brutally overbuilt guns that are affordable.

Mind if I steal your line? That's an awfully good description of Ruger handguns. I prefer S&W, but I have to give Ruger credit when it is due.

voted XD

My XD40sc has had more surface wear from my truck console than any holster I own for it. The only part I feel bad about is not carrying it more than I do.
When I grab it out of the truck it punches holes in paper just fine so I trust it to go bang as needed.

If you've seen my truck you'd know it qualifies as "Dirty work"

Anyone got any experience with the smith and weeson 5906 looking at one in a auction considering that for my beater.

I do. Good gun and can take a beating with ease. I have no problems recommending it for your intended purpose.

voted M9, but also consider Sig SP2022, Sig P6, CZ75, Ruger P series, Hi Point C9 (if you want something REALLY cheap), S&W 910, 5906, or EAA Witness

The 5906 would do just fine; all stainless steel and damn near indestructible. CDNN has used factory hi-cap magazines for $20.

For $500, you could buy a pistol, five spare mags, and still have enough left over for a couple hundred rounds of practice ammo.

I would recommend a Glock, but since you specifically stated that you don't want a Glock I instead recommend a Springfield XD.
In my opinion, it's the next best thing to a Glock.

The S&W M&P looks promising too but it hasn't been around long enough to really prove itself in my opinion.

I voted XD but think that one of the cheap police turn-in sigs might fit the bill as well.

I won't say Glock because you don't want a Glock and because I wouldn't ever suggest a Glock anyway. Life is too short to own such an ugly gun, so no Glock suggestion here.

Don't get mad at me, Thernlund. I'm just messing with you. :)

If he had not specified he didn't like a GLOCK, I would have suggested maybe a GLOCK 20 which is one of my favorite GLOCKS out of the dozen or so GLOCKS that I own. But since GLOCKS are out of the question, I won't even begin to suggest a GLOCK. I have to say though, that some people that don't like GLOCKS simply because they haven't spent some time shooting GLOCKS. The more I shoot, it seems I like GLOCKS more. Maybe since the op plans on treating the gun poorly, I would suggest something other than a nice GLOCK and instead suggest my least favorite in my safe, the XD.

First choice would be a German surplus SIG P6. It's a used SIG in the high $200s/ low $300s even after shipping and transfer fee. They're surplus so they've already been holster worn and beaten externally. We've sold about 100 at the shop where I work, and all been very good or better internally. The slides take fairly well to cold bluing with G96 paste, and really well to refinishing with Duracoat or KG Coatings products.

Outside of that take a look at the police trade in S&W autos CDNN has.

I know this is the autos forum, but if you're open to a revolver CDNN also police trade in 4" S&W Model 65s available. The price is right and the guns are good to very good. Again, the holster wear and duty gun scratches are already included with these.

the cz75b is a fun plinker at an affordable price i have one i have put maybe 1200 rounds through just plinking with friends

Figured I'd show my bias and pick the CZ since I love my 75B. Truth be told though, only two guns on your list would meet my criteria for ability to take abuse. The CZ and the Beretta simply because they have nice, sturdy metal frames.
The other gun I'd immediately give a nod to would be a Ruger P-series. They are big, heavy and the ergonomics aren't exactly tops (although they are better than any Glock) but the amount of abuse they will stomach is borderline insane.

I say XD of your choices. However, a glock would look better if it was covered in mud and beat to hell.

Now that's a very very interesting suggestion that hadn't occurred to me. Already beaten up, but a darn nice gun. Excellent suggestion.

I can't believe they way some folks low-rate Glocks. Is it because they're yugly? If that's it I can't argue with you.

I know that they tend to lose a lot of points in the esthetics department.
Personally, I don't like 'em because of the grip angle and ergos. The problem is, I shoot them really well and accurately when I have time to slow down and shoot at the range. but if I try to draw and fire quickly, my shots are all over the place. It doesn't point naturally for me at all which is why I won't own a glock, and I know that I've heard the same from many others.
So that's probably why people rag on Glock. The other part is that some people have a bugaboo about plastic guns.

They don't point right for me either, which is my big complaint about them. A complete and severe lack of ergonomics will kill any gun for me. And before it's asked, yes, I've owned one.

But another reason they are so heavily bashed is that the Glock owners swear loudly and often that they are the end-all-be-all saving grace to modern firearms.

Plus, even though the OP specifically said NOT to recommend Glocks because he doesn't like em, the Glock guys repeatedly thru this and other posts insist this is the gun he is looking for, when it obviously isn't.

Edit: See Below.
Sheesh.
