For plinking and HD?? Pros and Cons.

Only ONE thing i look for in a gun, RELIABILITY, ergonomic is the last thing on my mind, pull the trigger and it goes bang is my concern. XD has been around for a while now, not that long but its getting a real good feedback. I dont know much about the M&P.

S&W M&P model v Springfield XD

I shot a 228/240 with a class issued Springfield XD 9mmNATO. It was ok, but for my $$$, I'd go with the Smith and Wesson M&P model. Smith offers rebates and special offers plus, they have a lifetime repair/replacement policy. ;)
The XDs are very popular but I did not care for the design. It did shoot & feed 9mmNATO rounds well but I'm not a fan of the trigger set up.

Try both models and pick the best.

Rusty ;)

I have both an M&P 45 (as well as a .40) and XD 45. I had an XD 9, but sold it due to me liking my G17 & G19 better. As for the M&P or XD, I prefer the M&P, but the still like shooting the XD. I'd shoot them both and then decide or better yet help the economy and buy both!

I own them Both. I favor the XD-M

I have had my MP 9mm full size for well over a year now. Awesome gun. Accurate-Very Reliable. I Have Two of the New XD-M 9mm. They are built from the ground up to be An Excellent Gun. The MP is a Great Gun, but if I had to choose I would go with The XD-M. Please Note I am not referring to the Regular XD. This is the New XD-M. I think the XD-M, starting with its 19RD mags and Excellent trigger to be a slight favorite over the MP. You should feel the Spring on the XD-M. Go handle one at a gun store and you will see what I mean. The Match-Grade Barrel, Heavy Duty Stainless steel Mags, etc. From Top to Bottom this Gun is Built to Be Reliable, Functional and Last a Long time. High Quality workmanship. I like the Trigger because it has a short, fast reset and is very smooth. The XD-M shoots Great and is Very Accurate. Go Buy One:) It would also make a great Defensive Gun. Buy some Federal 147gr +P HST's or Some Winchester 147gr Bonded +P and you Have an Excellent Defensive Weapon! I should add, if you are talking about the Regular XD 9mm I would go with the SW-MP, it is a Better Gun then the Regular XD.

The Best to You and Yours!

Frank

I've had five XDs and four M&Ps. They are both good guns. On either one I would recommend you get the latest version. Earlier versions of each model had a few issues.

I own both and honestly they are both wonderful firearms. The XD feels more like a combat firearm. Cant' explain why though. And I would not get rid of either.

ergonomic is the last thing on my mind

Well, that's really the only difference between them (unless you prefer to buy American made goods like me, in which case it is the M&P).

Both are excellent guns. When I have people at the counter asking me which one between Glock, XD and M&P, I tell them the same thing I'm telling you. Whichever one feels best. I have found that most who came in without preconceptions chose the M&P.

I own the M&P40 FS and the M&P 9c. I would recommend the M&P to anyone who enquirers. I also had the quandary between the choice of the XD or my first M&P. After a ton of research between the two, I obviously choose the M&P and have never looked back.

I think something that is very telling is the stellar sales to LE agencies in the past couple of years. The M&P line has one more new contracts than any other line of pistols in its few short years of existence. To date the M&P has become the carry weapon for more than 370 LE departments as well as winning several federal agency and military contracts. To date the XD has won... hmmm, none that I can think of. Correct me if I'm wrong. The XD has only been able to get on a handful of approved to carry lists. (If a cop wants to buy his own.)

I would also like to point out in light of the current economic conditions, that the M&P is built here in the US. The XD is built in Croatia, and simply marketed and distributed in the US by Springfield. Sad but true.

I'd hate to disagree with the original question, but I think you might put more emphasis on ergonomics. Let me explain.

Reliability: I simply don't think there's enough information on reliability to guide your decision, short of doing a large sample statistical study. Ten or so responses on a forum will not tell you if either one has an edge.

Ergonomics: When you say you don't care about ergonomics, I interpret that as meaning that comfort does not matter to you. Fair enough.

But I'd suggest that if one gun naturally fits you better, this could give you an edge in a self defense fight. A more ergonomic gun may allow a more consistent grip, which may lead to faster, consistent aim. It's easier to train muscle memory if the correct positions also feel the most natural.

Just my 2 cents.

Practically speaking, I don't think we can distinguish between the reliability of the two, so you may as well pick the one that fits your hand best!

I only own M&Ps, and they are great pistols. Everything I've heard about the XDs is positive. The biggest difference in specs is the weight. The M&P is substantially lighter than the XD, which might be a factor if you plan to carry. Other than that, buy the one that feels best in your hand.

All that means is that S&W continues to have the same lasting relationships with PD's around the country that they've had for years. Doesn't mean they have a better gun. Those PD's that are carrying M&P's probably carried 5906's, 4046's, etc.. before that.

I have a Plastic M&P 9mm standard that suits me very well, BUT...
I picked it up from the store, shot it a box of shells to be sure there was not some gross flaw to call for warranty service, and then sent it straight off to Dan Burwell for a trigger job.

A friend, who wanted a satisfactory stock gun tried them all and went XD, he said it had a better trigger than any stock M&P he saw. Better than Glock, too.

I figure that XD lacks government agency sales because the original importer established it as equivalent to a single action, and government agencies do not trust many of their agents with single action pistols. S&W was able to promote the P-M&P as equivalent to a double action. That is ludicrous if you see the mechanics, but they passed it off, and are raking in the business.
