If you were faced with the unthinkable and could only have five firearms, or wish you had five, what would they be and why ?

Thompson SMG + silencer. The original version with a C drum.
Don't try to tell me that a twelve gauge can beat a Tommy gun with a 100 rd drum. This is perfect for home defense.

M2 Carbine + silencer.
Longer range work, also good for close range. It's basically an old-school PDW. May have the starlight scope, or just have a picatinny rail mounted with a(n) NV scope or red-dot sight. It ought to kill any animal in the 50 states, with enough volume of fire, anyway.

Vz 61 Skorpion (think that's the name)
My preferred concealed carry piece.

Five-SeveN + silencer.
I ought to say 1911 - but I've got to choose the evil-looking 'assault pistol' with the 'cop killer bullets'. Probably be quieter than a .45 when silenced, anyway. This is when my Skorpion doesn't have the range to take out that one zombie on the hillside and I left the M2 at home. Also good when over-penetration could be a hazard to loved ones and other non-zombies.

Mauser 712 Machine Pistol - the original 'assault pistol'. Pistol grip, shoulder stock, selective fire. Probably side-mount a scope and have an all-purpose fun gun - varmint/zombie hunting.

I'm more for portability. Sure, a SAW would be fun - but it's not easy enough to carry. I could load these five guns in a normal suitcase.

As for concealed carry - the Skorpion might be too big for summer carry. The 5.7 then, since it's so light.

I can see that this will be very inlightening , my thoughts on the basic five might be a Rem. 870 , a Springfield M1A , .45acp 1911 type, bolt action .204 or .223 , and E.G. Makarov  Or a Ruger sp 101 .357 mag. Being the thread starter I'm the only one who gets to have the Or

I despise these threads , if you could only have X # of guns, but for the minimalists out there , I thought this would be interesting. ;)

-a glock 17

-Sig P220 in .45

-Sig 550/1/2/3 (any 5.56 rifle with folding stock)

-a 12 gauge mossberg 500-590 or Remington 870 pump

-Remington 700 in .308

A Union Switch and Signal M1911, in perfect shape.

A Bersa Thunder .380, well-worn but in perfect working order. ;)

A smooth, accurate, perfect-condition hex-receiver M91/30 (and REAL Mosin stripper clips).

A Kel-Tec SU-16C in black, with an EOTech.

A Mossberg Maverick 88 with an 18.5" barrel, and side saddle.

Basically, I'd have the M1911 and Mosin for collecting/ nostalgic reasons (even though they're not a historically matching pair), the Bersa for CCW, the SU-16C for a fun sport utility rifle, and the Maverick as a no-nonsense home defense shotgun.

In case hunting was ever required, the Mosin and/or the Maverick would do in a pinch. For teaching new shooters, the Kel-Tec recoils gently enough, as does the Bersa (new shooters seem to love the Bersa far more than any other gun I own, anyway  ). The M1911 could make a dandy night-stand gun.

All are reliable, easy-to-maintain designs that have been proven over several decades. Ammunition is fairly easy to find, and cheap for the rifles.

Lastly, I like all of them. Only reason that the US&S M1911 is mentioned is that nobody makes them like that anymore... and so many could. :(

A pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 in .375 H&H for hunting.

A Ruger 10/22 for plinking, hunting small game, and all around inexpensive fun.

A Remington 870 that I can configure for both home defense and busting clays.

A M1A, for SHTF purposes and hunting things that are too small for the .375, if I ever get the urge. If they ever get around to making a VEPR .308 that takes high capacity mags, I'll take one of those instead.

A Glock 29, I'd convert it to .40 S&W for concealed carry and back to 10mm for defense from large animals.

Even though I live in britain these would be my 5 ovbivously a couple of these are illegal here these are the 5 fire arms I would love to have if I could only have 5.
- A SMLE No.4 Mark 1 in .303 I would use this for hunting deer and target shooting.

- A .455 Webley and Scott Mark 6 I would use this for ccw (if it was legal here) and home defence.

- A bolt action .22 magnum rifle with a nice scope on it just for general plinkering and getting rid of rabits.

- A Remington 870 also for home defnece but also cause its can be so easily modified for difrent uses.

- And a L1A1 for target shooting and also home defence and maybe a suit sat on it for long range shooting and hunting.

Rock Island 1911- reliability, stopping power
Bersa Thunder 380- concealablilty, reliability
Mossberg 12 ga. - game, home defense,
Henry Survival .22lr- small game, plinking, last resort defense
Romanian AK- Defense at it's prime, reliability

(I'd love to throw a Ruger Mini-14 in there for game/defense)

As you can tell, this is the "Poor Man's" SHTF weapons group. Nothing fancy... nothing expensive. But they have proven to be effective in their area of expertise and very reliable. The most expensive thing on the list is the Ruger Mini-14 for $475 at my local WalMart.

Wow! Five! Beats the heck out of the "If you could only have three" threads! Anyway, here's what I think I'd take:

1. Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 12 gauge with shot and slug barrels; defense and hunting
2. Remington 700 in .308 with Leupold or better variable scope up to at least 10X; long range accuracy, hunting
3. M1A (.308); battle rifle in same caliber as my long range hunting rifle
3. Scoped Ruger 10/22 .22LR; small game, plinking, last resort defense
5. Ruger GP100 .357; defense, stopping power

Im still working on my five that I would take. While reading this people have made some good points legionnaire pointed out ammunition commonality between his long range hunting rifle and his battle rifle which is a good idea. Most people are doing a good job of having rifles, pistols and a shotgun. Which is a versatile mixture of arms. Geronimo mentioned supressors which might not be a bad idea at least for one of the firearms on the list. However the idea that the FN 5.7X28 would be quieter when supressed is unlikely. .45 ACP is a much easier round to supress as its already subsonic when fired from a handgun. Though supressor technology is better today than ever before quieting a crack of supersonic weapons is inherently more difficult. No one had really mentioned ammo or magazines so I assume its a give that you have plenty of these.

Brother in Arms

My five:

1. AR-15 (5.56 chambered)

2. Remington 870 (28 inch barrel w/screw in chokes)

3. Ruger 10/22

4. Remington 700 (scoped in 30-06)

5. Glock 19

1) Mossberg 500 or Remington 870
2) Bushmaster AR-15/M4gery w/ optics
3) Savage Mk II .22lr with scope
4) Springfield Loaded .45, 5" barrel or Springfield XD .45 tactical
5) Springfield XD 9 SC

1. Scoped bolt gun in one of the major 30 caliber chamberings(308, 30-06).
2. High cap. semi-auto rifle in 223.
3. Lever action rifle in 357 magnum.
4. double action revolver in 357.
5. High cap. semi auto pistol in 9mm.

Exact platforms negotiable. Only one requirement:
MUST BE RELIABLE!!!

Yes, I know I didn't put a shotgun in there. But you said only five, and if I get the intent of your post, a shotgun is out due to the weight/bulk of ammo.

CZ-452 .22 Mag for small game
Spgfld M-1A .308 for larger game and MBR.
Rem 700VS .308 for long range applications
Remington 870 for birds and CQB (barrel swaps are easy)
Glock G-19 for carry.

All of the above have fairly standard ammo or cheap enough that I can stock up.

Okay, I'll play...
Assuming I didn't already have most of them, here is my list:

Mossberg 590A1-Home Defense
SA M1A SOCOM II-CQB rifle
Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special 1911A1-CQB pistol
HK P7M8-Conceal carry
Accuracy International AWM in .300 WSM-Ruin targets from afar

I'll be set for hunting purposes, combat, target shooting, and Zombie fighting all in one. I covered on 4 out of 5, now I'm working on the 5th. Then I'll be complete.

If limited to 5, I like this thread MUCH better than the recent 3 firearms limit
