Now don't get me wrong--I love my SAR-1, but eventually I wanna get another AK that doesn't feel so... well, cheap. I like the 7.62x39mm round, and already have a bunch of double-stack mags for the SAR-1. However, the SAR seems rather small, and I'd also like to have an AK that fits me. The longer barrel of the VEPR II appeals to me more than the VEPR K, but I'd also not mind having a muzzle brake on there either. So, the ones to which I've narrowed it down are the SLR-101 SB, the SAM-7, and the VEPR II. What would you get?

SAM-7 http://www.arsenalinc.com/sam7.html

Which high-end AK would you get?

now, don't get me wrong, i know i don't know (er, as it were) what i'm talking about, but... something about the concept of "high end ak" sounds... flawed, to me.

I've fired a friends SLR-95, the cousin the SLR-101 and it was very very nice. I suspect any of them would serve very nicely. The VEPR differs most from a standard AK style, so you have to decide for yourself it that's what you like.

Very happy with my SA-M7S, but I've always been interested in a Vepr K as well.

High end AK? You mean a Galil or a Valmet? Of the former East Bloc nations selections the highest quality most rugged type I've run across is the Yugo variant as was imported by Mitchell Arms. I have 3 ; an RPK style .308(very weird), in 7.62x39mm an under folder, and a standard AK . These are preban guns with teak wood stocks and night sights and slant muzzle brake. They don't have bayonet lugs though.. These guns run a pound and a half heiver than their hungarian eguivalents, the recievers are thicker with more rivets. The triggers are good and the barrels accurate. I've seen them for sale for $700 or so , afterall you said high end!:D

If your willing to spend $700 and up, then get a Krebs AK. You wont regret it.

Modified Saiga anyone?:D

Also check out Ohio Rapid Fire, they seem to get a lt of good customer feedback. I think they make their own, not sure.

Althought the VEPR II is really more of an RPK kind of thing I really believe it is the best bang for your AK buck.

I have had one for quite some time, 4 years or so, and it is absolutly awesome. Reliable to a fault, very very accurate and not just for an AK. Basically somebody coined the phrase the AK by HK and I agree. Shooting the VEPR feels more like an HK variant than an AK variant.

Now for the big CON of the VEPR series. They are heavy and worse yet nose heavy. If you go VEPR I would suggest the shorter K variant. I don't mind the weight and it is not a big issue but the VEPR does not feel like a light handy AR15...more like a FAL carbine.

We have both a VEPR II and VEPR .308 and both are absolutely spectacular firearms for the dollar.

I'm very happy with my VEPR K.

My buddy has an SA-M7.. its a great gun as well.

I doubt you could go wrong with any of them.

Which high-end AK would you get?

I was recently faced with the same decision and I went with the VEPR K in 7.62X39. I wanted the short barrel with no muzzle break.

It is a FANTASTIC buy! I am very happy with how it shoots, it's reliability, and it's eeeeevil good looks. It looks a LOT better in person than it does in pictures. I am so happy with it that now I want one in .223!

Aside from price, what are the differences between the SA M-7 and the SLR-101 SB? Their descriptions read practically the same...

Dionysusigma,
The SLR doesn't have the cleaning rod under the barrel. The SLR uses cast fire control components instead of forged. The SLR uses a Bulgarian single stack receiver that is converted in the US for double stack mags. Arsenal Inc has announced they will no longer be selling the SLR since they are coming out with a stamped receiver line.

How high end?

An AK74 SU with a supressor?

Heck even an SBR version of that would be cool.

Why aren't Saiga rifles on the list? They may not be especially expensive or flashy, but they're well made (high end) AK's in my book.

Krebs KTR-03V, in 5.56mm. Probably the best made AK variant I've ever seen. . . and I own about eight or nine of them, a 7.62mm Galil and a Valmet. Has a lot of really neat features, like

a Galil style thumb safety,

a rear mounted AR style rear sight,

and an AR style elevation adjustable front sight

A built-in M1913 rail ahead of the rear sight

Kreb's adaptation of the AK74 muzzle brake is the single most efficient muzzle brake I've ever used, and the gun will hold about an inch if I do my part.

Then there are the accessories. . . .

The KTR-03S already has an anodized aluminum three sided M1913 rail system that can replace the forend and hand guard, and will accept any AR style accessory, and one will be made for the KTR-03V soon.

Now, in keeping with my mantra of "expensive is not necessarily BETTER, " I have to say that the KTR's are not any more reliable than a run of the mill SAR. What they are is smoother, with better ergonomics and fire control, and more accurate. If reliability is your only benchmark, buy a SAR. If you want reliability coupled with the advantages and aesthetics of a semi-custom gun, then buy the KTR - you will NOT be disappointed.

Vepr K

If the VEPR II runs as good as my VEPR K you will love it. I am an AK man...does not mean I dont own other MBR. If your an AK man, and it sounds like it, its the AK for you! Check out there website you can get a SMA with there Vepr line.
my .1/2 cents
Riz
