I'm looking at buying an old M1 .30 carbine to take out and have some fun. I'm thinking of buying some ammo and save the brass for reloading. I've found on Ammoman's site both SELLIER AND BELLOT and Federal -- American Eagle brands. I've heard people not liking the Federal brass, 'cause it's too soft and the primer pocket is thin. But I've never heard much about S&B brass. Which one would be better for reloading?

thanks
Rob

If you can afford some initial investment - get yourself some StarLine brass ... it is GOOD IMO.

Not a huge fan of S&B brass ... to me it seems to work harden too quick. No major experience with Fed tho have used it for numerous cal's in small qtys..

I second the Starline suggestion. Federal brass is also good. Wincherster is good. S&B is fine, but it does seem to be on the hard side. Remington brass seems to be way on the soft side.

In auto rifle applications, Remington has a reputation for being soft and/or weak and/or thin. I have a good friend that shoots High Power. Had problems with case heads being pulled off.

First thing the guy from RRA asked "you're using Remington brass, aren't you?"

If you're gonna shoot a military weapon, might try to get military brass. You won't have problems, other than crimped primer pockets that need to be reamed the first time

What is best for GI weapons

GI weapons used GI ammo that lives depended for being reliable. For me I love GI brass with GI weapons. It is stronger and lasts longer especially for target loads. I have fired ammo with Steel 45acp GI cases and I still have them as they never wear out if you keep them rust free. I have shot GI brass cases so much that the head printing has filled in making it hard to read.

I have both kinds of brass for different kinds of bullets. GI brass had FMJ copper jacketed bullets. You have to figure the diameter of your reloader expander for the bullet you wish to use. Jacketed or lead.

Starline & Federal

I'll third the Starline suggestion.A lot of folks talk down the federal brass but I can give it nothing but praise. For me it's been some of the most consistantly good once fired range brass I've found.

Thanks for all the replies. I took Paul's advise and bought a USGI sardine tin of Lake City ammo this weekend along with an Inland M1 carbine.

I went to Starline's brass website and unfortunately they don't offer .30 carbine brass at this time.

thanks all
Rob
