Which gun kicks harder to you? A 12 gauge with 3 inch slugs/buckshot or a .300 wby mag with 150 gr bullets. I know this is rifle country, but more people are here than shotgun. The rifle 8 3/4 lbs the shotgun is 7 1/2 lbs. I know about stock configuration and everything else goes into recoil, I just want to know which one do you think kicks harder?

The 12 gauge with 3 inch buckshot doesn't bother me, but I would say the 12 gauge kicks harder than my 300 wby mag.

The only time I get a black & blue bruised shoulder is sighting in a shotgun slugs.....they do seem to have some brutal recoil.

That depends on several factors.Weight of the weapon, how the weapon is stocked, mechanism, recoil pad and the shooter.

I have a friend that has an older(20+years) Weatherby rifle in 300 weatherby mag and it kicks like a mule!!Its the stock that really sucks, beautiful but painful,my .375 H&H kicks less and I'm not recoil sensitive.

Everbody is different on how they perceive recoil.Shooting 12 gauge slugs and buckshot or heavy shot loads doesn't bother me much.My Remington 11-87 has less felt recoil than my 870 with the same loads.Operating mechanisms and recoil pads can spread(delay) the recoil impulse over a longer period of time so it feels less.

Here is a simple recoil program to use to find out how much recoil your gun generates.

The 12 gage likely shoves harder; but the .300 is more likely to get shot from a bench. Leaning into and crouching over the .300 from the bench gives a pretty decent smack; I bet if you shot them both standing off-hand, the 12 would probably be the bigger villain.

12 gauge is a shove - the 300 wby is a sharp blow. I think my .270 wby is harder then my 12g with slugs. I think gun weight in this case is a poor excuse, its all about the wby double radius shoulder and how the energy comes out.
just my .02
