I want to make some handloads for my Garand. While any loading manual has 30-06 data, the pressures are too high for the Garand. Which manuals have specific Grand load data? Anyone want to share their favorite load using either H4895 or IMR4895 WITH A 150gr fmjbt?

My load with IMR4895 is 47.5 grains with surplus 150 fmj-fb bullets using LC or RP or Winchester brass using RP 9 1/2 primers. Overall length at 3.320". I see no need to drop below 46.5 and above 48 grains.
I shoot Hornady's 150 gr. FMJ bullet with the same load at 47.5 grains of IMR 4895 with the Rem 9 1/2 primer. Hornady did have an overall length with their 150fmj at 3.258 which put the cannelure in front of the mouth of the case but in the last 7th Edition manual in the Garand section overall length tested is 3.185" for the 150fmj bullet # 3037 and that length puts the cannelure at the proper place for crimping.
In my Garand 47 grains of IMR4895 and the Hornady bullet showed 2725fps
47.5--2736
48--2750 approx.
Factory LC 69 shot 2711 in my rifle.

I use the same basic load with 150 SMK's, LC brass, CCI#34 primers. I seat my less than 3.30 (the bunch I chronographed were at 3.290") because over long cartridges will cause jams loading.

It is no fun busting a fingernail trying to get the clip in.

GI ammo is not hot at all. I have chronographed TW56 in a 26 inch match barrel and received 2680 fps.

Just keep your velocites less than or equal to 2700 fps with a 150, and you will do fine.

I have a Garand and it's not really the pressures that are the problem, it's the powder burn rate. If you stick with using 4895 you will be fine just don't use 4350 or another slower powder like that. If you're worried about pressures just stick with the starting charge of H4895 and you will be fine. I use H4895 in my M1 ammo.

I've found IMR 4064 gives me a little tighter groups than the 4895's. I'm also starting to play with Varget. Seems to work pretty well in my 308 M-1.

And it is burn rate which detirmines which powder to use.

Mr. Paper,

The latest Hornady manual lists the following for 150 grain bullets and H4895in the M1 Garand:

2400 fps = 43.2 grains
2500 fps = 44.8 grains
2600 fps = 46.4 grains

If you PM me your email, I can send you a scan of the pages

John
