I was just about to purchase a Marlin 60SB (stainless) when I have been reading more about the Marlin 39 and I think I have been sold !! However the price seems to be over double and a lot of places do not have it in stock. I am Considering a new or used one. So far locally I can get a used (99%) Golden 39AS for $395; still a little steep it seems? Am I better off looking for a used 39A (no cross bolt safety) ? If so what can I expect to pay for a like new 39A used ? Any opinions or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Basically I am looking for a good 22 rifle for hunting, target and plinking.

The 39 in any form is a classy rifle that will increase in value and will be passed down to several generations. The 60 is a good gun and a great value for the money but will never have the classic value of the 39. I think that $395 is a pretty good price for a used one in good shape. I do not think you can go wrong with any of them, but I like the Mountie, 39M with straight stock and 20" barrel best myself.

thanks jmr40

Anybody know what the "best" price on a new 39AS is currently ? Seems like there is a shortage and hard to find prices. Just want to figure how much I will save if I decide to go with the used for $395. Thanks.

+1 Any 39 will be a good gun, I gave a bit more than that for the 39M (delivered and transfer) but I LOVE IT! Here local you can find a few for less, but not a lot unless they have some serious miles on them.

I have 3 of them, my father-in-law has like 10 of 'em from 1923-present.

I LOVE them. If I was you, I'd find a nice older one, from the 50/60/70's. They are (imho) a better rifle, although the new ones are nice too. The older ones just have a lot of character, are dependable, easy to fix, and have cleaner lines (no safety or checkering). I have a 1957 Golden in near-perfect condition with a Lyman peep sight that is fun to shoot offhand, a 1961 Golden in decent condition with an original scope that is great for squirrels, and a 1969 Mountie with a Buckhorn sight that is my favorite just plinking around wince it handles well with the shorter barrel.

I think any decent condition pre-safety 39 (really, any 39) for under $400 is a good deal. I've seen many "pretty good" to "good" condition 50's/60's 39's go for $500-600, they are just rare in some places.

I paid $480 for a new one a few months ago.

i love them, but they are to pricey for me. so i bought a henry lever rifle instead. i am not particularly worried about collector value, or family heirloom status. i just want a rifle to have fun with. and i certainly do. plus, if it gets scratched or dropped by one of my kids, i wont be screaming like a mad-man (which i would with the marlin).

Looks like the Henry's are like 1/2 the price of a Marlin, but barrel length is 18.5" vs 24" and weight is 5lbs vs 7.5lbs...how do these two rifles compare in performance etc ?

Getting complicated; so far my choices are:

New Marlin 39AS $480
Used 99% Marlin 39AS $395
New Henry Golden Boy $380 (20" oct)
Used (new in box) Henry Golden Boy $350

Still trying to find some more used 39A etc for comparison

I would not worry a lot about barrel length in a 22. There is very little difference in velocity with anything over 18" or so. It really just is a matter of balance and how the rifle feels to you. A lot of people prefer the longer weight and weight of the 24" Marlin.

If you want a rifle to shoot I have heard nothing bad about the Henry, but for $15 more buying the used Marlin is a NO BRAINER.

Marlin 39 receiver = Forged steel.

Henry receiver = Pot-metal casting, with a thin sheet-metal cover over it.

That right there is all I would need to know.

Hard to believe you haven't already bought that used Marlin for $395.

I am trying to get myself to "pull the trigger" :D and spend $400 on a 22. I few weeks ago I bought a Rossi 92 EMF 357/38 stainless 20" octagonal 99% for $295 from the same dealer and I now want to a good 22LR for all around use especially for small game (currently using a ruger mark II govt target bull 6 7/8"). Maybe time to sell a few of the handguns to make room for this 22 !! (taurus PT1911 and bulg mak will be the first to go). After holding a brand new 39AS and then a Henry Golden Boy I fell in love with the feel and quality of the 39AS. But for basically $85 less I can get a new one w/o box.

"I am trying to get myself to "pull the trigger" and spend $400 on a 22"

LOLOLOL :D:D:D

It is a curious thing that even though most of us shoot our .22 rimfires 10 times more than we do all our other guns combined - and even though .22 ammo is so cheap it compensates for even a very expensive .22 rifle in no time - for some totally crazy reason we think the gun we use the most should be the one we spend the least for.

Of all the guns we should balk at spending big dollars for - our .22 rifle should be the very last.

Where is it and what is their phone number ?

I've wanted a lever gun for a long time and figured I'd probably end up with a 30/30 or maybe one in .357 magnum. I pretty much went through the same thought process Shawnee talked about and decided I wanted a nice lever gun that I'd shoot a lot, and I'll shoot a lot more .22 than anything else, so I got a 39a today.

Last new price I saw was $495, but new or used they are normally hard to fine.

$395 for a nice used one is a good price if the gun is in good shape.

I got one a few weeks ago for $400 out-the-door and it is the first nice used one I have found after looking for almost 3 years. It is the most accurate 22 rifle I own.

I have a couple of Winchester 9422's in 22LR, one has some dings and cost about $300 a couple of years ago and the other was $495 for a like-new XTR model. Both are great guns. Can't warm up to the pot-metal in the Henry, despite the lower price. Browning makes a nice non-traditional 22 lever gun, but it's not cheap either.

In my area nice used Marlin 39s last less than a week in my local shop. If I were you, I'd be posting a "I just shot my new-to-me 39A" post. If you hate it you can still probably sell it for what you paid for it with a few on-line posts. Wait too long and you might not be able to find one new or used.

Good luck, they are great guns!

Bought the 39AS !!!

Well....I picked up the "used" (basically new, don't look like was ever fired) Marlin 39AS this morning (and I believe it would of not lasted much longer) !!! Thanks for all those who took time to post and "nudge" me to go ahead and go with the used 39AS....basically saved my self $85 over a NIB. I really love the feel of the gun and can't wait to test it out tomorrow !!

Y2,

Nice going on the rifle purchase.

Now get thee to the Marlin 39 club thread and sign on. At last look there were over 74 pages of posts about one of the greatest rifles in the American inventory. You'll see tricks and tips on cleaning, ammo use, sights, and much more.

Make sure write up a detailed range report. And we want pictures!

Good going,

CONGRATULATIONS !!! You very well may have avoided a wait of several months (or more) to get one !

Thanks Shawnee !! If anybody is interested I know of a local gun shop that has a new 39AS in stock for $480. (at least as of yesterday 12/9)

johnmcl....thanks for the tips....I will be posting on that thread shortly !!

I am wanting to pick up a 39 in the Houston area but can't find any available.

Anyone have any suggestions?
