Joining the NRA soon, and was wondering which of the three magazines they offer would be the best for general knowledge and information. Which and why?

I get both American Rifleman and America's 1st Freedom. Rifleman has more general and how-to info. 1st Freedom is mostly political, but also has some general info. They all three have some common content.

I flipped a figurative coin, went with "America's First Freedom" when I signed up at the gun show today. Not that it's fun reading, exactly, but I joined up mostly to keep informed wrt lobbying efforts (or, I guess, anti-lobbying efforts, sad as it is) at the gun-politics interface. In the two samples I skimmed, the content seemed to overlap so much I refuse to worry much :)

I declined a magazine subscription with my full membership. The $3.84 or whatever it costs for the subscription can used for a better cause.

I would say American Rifleman (AR). I also get the 1st Freedom but a lot of the content in it is same as the AR.

I alternate between American Hunter and American Rifleman at each annual renewal. I've been so locked into those two that I didn't even realize there is a third choice!

I`ve had all three over the years that I `ve been a member. I currently get the 1st Freedom magazine. I would say you would probably like American Rifleman better as it includes some content as the other two do. I think Shooting Illustrated is the better of the three, but to get SI from the NRA, it costs 9.95 a year. I`d subscribe to it, but I have enough subscriptions to other gun mags.

Does 1st Freedom magazine cover material that isn't discussed here on THR?

I would say that if you check in here on a regular basis (2-3/week or more), then you will get most of what FF covers and you will also get it sooner. This is the reason that I switched over to American Rifleman, which also covers some of the political stuff.

If you want, sign up for SAF and GOA e-mail alerts. They will help give you a good picture of what is happening on the national gun-rights front.

depends on what you prefer, all three have overlap to some degree, if you already have a subscription to G&A or hunting, you are probably better off with 1st freedom, if not American Rifleman covers many of the topics of the other two and is a decent rag that covers a wide range of topics.

"Does 1st Freedom magazine cover material that isn't discussed here on THR?"

I bet most things in there hit THR some time or other (often well before they'll be in print), but for a couple of reasons the overlap doesn't bother me.

a) Cross fingers, but sadly THR and other sites are often taken down by vandals. Not as often usually as in the past month, but the world is uncertain, new attacks get dreamed up by the vandals, etc.

b) Magazine on the coffee table (or, depending on work environment, in the waiting room, customer lounge, etc) gets seen by people are certainly aren't reading THR.

c) My leisure reading room for some reason has high humidity, so I'd rather not keep a computer there.

The Rifleman used to be a fair gun rag but now its mostly ads and politics. I got Freedom because it doesn't pretend and include halfast articles on guns.

You can always change your magazine subscription any time. I get American Hunter and the wife gets American Rifleman, love being able to double dip! When your ready to join use the link in my signature line and you get a $10 discount off of an annual membership.

Perhaps, but I share it with folks at work, Dr's office, travel etc that normally only get the mainstream "guns are just awful" slant.

I like 1st Freedom.

I used to get the American Hunter and changed to the American Rifleman. The American Hunter seemed to cover too much about the ultra expensive hunts I can not afford.

This is easy, every one in the family is a life member. So I get the Rifleman, the son get Hunter, the oldest Daughter gets Freedom, the youngest get Womans outlook... Are you seeing a trend here?

Rifleman is the best overall, in that it has a bit of everything. If you're a fudd or only care about hunting guns, hunter might be the better option. I've enjoyed first freedom when I've read it, but its not as entertaining as rifleman.

Wish I got both Hunter and Rifleman, but Rifleman is what I first started with, long before American Hunter existed, and I'm just set in my ways!
