Which peep sight Lyman or Williams?

I have a newish Marlin 336SS .30-30 lever rifle and want to put better sights on it than the factory ones that came with it.

The Williams foolproof (fp)-336 can be mounted on top of the receiver. They made this version because Marlin no longer tapped the side of the receiver after 2000. This seems like a good one.

Another good one seems to be the Lyman 66la. I don't think that it can be top mounted however.

Local gunsmith will charge $18 per hole. That would put the Lyman up an extra $36.

I have read a little about these on these boards but never a head to head.

Anyone out there have any strong opinions regarding which peep mentioned here might be preferable?

Receiver sights

All else being equal, choose the one that is the easiest to install. I have the Lyman on my 1894CS and on my 336 but they were old enough to have been drilled and tapped for it at the factory. From what I have read and seen there really isn't much difference in capability and the prices are close as well.

I just put a Williams 5D on an Ishapore Enfield, the cost from Midway was $35. Wish I had bought the Williams FP model instead for $59. The difference is that the FP has micrometer click adjustment capability and the 5D does not.

If you are not going to change your sight adjustment often then the 5D works fine, however if you are going to change the adjustment frequently, as in using different loads or shooting at different distance, then the FP is well worth the extra $24......IMO.

At the range last week I was tweeking the windage and needed to move the strike of the bullet about 2 inches on the target. Now this wasn't much, but after I'd loosened the windage screws I inadvertantly pushed the sight about 1/2' to the left. Had to start all over again.

That's when I wished I had bought the other sight.

The Williams works well; I'd not feel the need to look further if the receiver may not be tapped for the Lyman. By the way, Williams actually makes two receiver mounted peep sights that work on the Marlins; the FP and the WGRS. The WGRS isn't as easy to adjust, but it is much mo' compact.....

Just checked midwayusa ($59) and natchez shooting supply ($49) and they are both out and backordered. (Natchez has been waiting since Dec 13th.)


Others have them too, that I have seen so far, but are quite a bit more expensive; (Amazon $71+$9, and $85!!).

Williams themselves have them listed for $80.

Guess I have to decide whether to wait, or to pony up more than I think they are worth and/or am willing to pay.

AO/XS Sights makes a rear aperture sight that is a viable alternative....
