hey im loading for a 25-06 rem. i will be using hornady sst 117. what powder and primer works the best? i will be hunting deer and hopefully some hogs. thanks for any help.

I do not shoot that bullet, but I load a 115gr Nosler BT and a 120gr Sierra GK. For my rifles, nothing beats 4831. I use WLR primers also.

Either of the 4831's will work well with that bullet weight. However I have a buddy that shoots that same 117 gr bullet out of his Ruger #1 and gets excellent results with RL25. YMMV however.

Another vote for RL-22. I like to shoot heavy-for-caliber bullets, and RL-22 fills that bill nicely.

IMR or H4831 powder is a very good place to start. You probably won't have to look further. If you can't find any and you can find AA-3100 it's worth a try too.

I've been shooting a 25/06 since 1969.

For the 115 gr -120 gr bullets go with the slow powders. IMR4831, H4831, IMR 7828, RL22, RL25, VV N165, Win WMR, H1000 and Magnum.

There are other powders that will work on both ends of the burning range, but you will find the best combination of accuracy and velocity with the IMR 4831, IMR 7828 & RL 22 range for that bullet.

I like IMR 7828 best for my gun, a Browning A-Bolt. You'll find that your gun will like one brand and weight bullet and a powder better than the others, if it is a typical rifle.

If you're trying to save a few bucks (and who isn't) look at www.gibrass.com and give the WC852 a try. Best metering powder I've ever used. With a 117 Hornady BTSP and 52.5-53.5 grains of WC852, great accuracy in my Ruger heavy barreled varmint rifle (<1" groups at 100 yds), light recoil, no pressure. It's a fairly slow powder around the range of the 4831's to about H414/W760.

You'll find that with 100 grain bullets, powders in the IMR 4350 - IMR 4831 burn range, will give you more velocity than the slower range ones. Check out Reloder 17... from all accounts I've read RL17 gives very fast velocity for those 100 gr bullets as well. I have not used any RL 17... yet.

Get a powder burn chart, then you'll see what I'm saying about burn range. Then look up your powder in several reloading manuals to get the velocity range. Then make your choice and work up you loads. Most of the reloading manuals have those charts in them.

I do not load for my .25-06 yet. It shoot the Winchester 115 grain BT Supreme to good, but I can say the Combined Technology bullet is a dandy. That is what Winchester uses, and it drops deer straight down. Great penetration and wound channel. I am super impressed. I know you asked about powder, and I am sorry. At this time I do not have any info for you, but thought I would tell you my experience with a particular bullet for whitetail hunting.
