I got a Tikka T3 Lite in 30-06 which I love. the bolt is the smoothest I have ever used.

I'm exploring and learning here....those Sakos look really nice.

I've read some glowing reviews of Tikka rifles online as well. Thoughts?

Haha here I was thinking I was set on the Remington. Sometimes I think the internet gives folks too much information!

Tikkas are great rifles, and despite their standing as "bargain Sakos", they seem to perform as a top-notch gun. Obviously the Remington 700 is also a well-respected platform.

As Coloshooter pointed out, the Remington 700 series has a lot more upgrades easily available, but the Tikkas really don't need anything to work on their own. The Rem SPS Tactical AAC edition is a darn nice rifle for the money, and easy to upgrade if you choose to. I'm also fond of the Remington 700 Police model, if your budget allows for a bit more spending.

It is a bit harder to find aftermarket parts for my Tikka, but the rifle performs well beyond my expectations as a bone stock rifle.

I wouldn't buy a rem right now. They are having serious QC problems. I have 2 Brownings one in later A bolt.Stay away from the first ones they had bolt bind problems and the other an X bolt. Both are in 30/06 a caliber that really can do it all. They are both awsome shooters. The only thing to tinker with is the triggers and load development. The A bolt is the most accurate of the 2 and shoots into 1/2" any time I want it to. The X bolt is a 5/8" gun. Thats good enough in my book especially with full house hunting loads off the hood of a truck rested on sandbags. Try a Browning you'll like it. Frank

.. Pick up a pull of HS Precision stock and throw a new barrel on it. ...

That would be the same H-S precision that decided to hire the services of the killer Lon Horiuchi to sell rifles to the FBI. I will never spend one cent with H-S Precision - ever.

LOL I logged on here just to do a quick search on the value of my 700 in .30-06. It was reworked by H&H in the 70's I think and i can't find any serial # info for range #21xxx.
In my experience there are usually way more offerings in appropriate hunting cartridges chambered in .30-06 available in most retails joints.
I have range time with lots of stuff- most recently my FAL in .308 - and the 700 in .30-06 would be the very last gun I'd sell. In fact I would probably disappear off the grid with it before I sold it for rent... or food for that matter.
You get a little flatter shooting rifle in .30-06, a few more choices in hunting ammo IMO and experience in most retail places, but the .308 should allow you to use the NATO 7.62 surplus which can be had for around .40 a round vs. $1 for .30-06 allowing maybe a little more range time.
In the end I'd start with the RIFLE you can get a GOOD DEAL on and one that fits you well and you like the looks and mechanics of and worry about calibers later on. Any .30 round is fine for just about anything that walks, crawls, gallops, (or swims for that matter) on this planet... I've seen Inuits kill whales with .30-06's....in the end shot placement beats the insurance policy of an extra 100 fps...
Depending on where you dream of hunting, sure a .30-.30 might not reach out far and flat enough, but in my experience most stuff from NJ to Namibia CAN be shot at under 200 yards, and with a few exceptions like sheep, antelope, and game under the jurisdiction of lazy guides usually is.
Find the perfect rifle for you and worry about caliber second.

Hey guys! Just wanted to say thanks for all of the input and let you know that I ordered a rifle yesterday. Drumroll....

Went with the Tikka T3 Lite Stainless in .300 Win Mag. Can't wait to get it! Now I'll be researching scopes....

this troll's 2 cents are that my remington 700 is a very nice rifle, I have it in 30-06 as that's my favorite round. Lots of power there in both bullet weight and powder charge. But mine kicks like a mule! I had a wal-mart mossberg ATR in 30-06 that was plenty accurate and a real pleasure to shoot, my small girlfriend could easily go through a box of rounds in that and be ready for more, if I go through a box of rounds in my remington I'm ready for an icepack and a few days off.

I'm guessing it's got to do with the amount of twist in the riflings. While my winchester is by far the better gun, I'd honestly rather have my ATR back and the only reason I don't is just because of the name.... I would guess the remington is more accurate, but I'm more of a hunter than a paper puncher and where I live very long range shots are rare so accuracy isn't as big of a deal, if it'll group in something the size of a deer's head then it's ok by me. If you want a "good" gun by all means get one, but if you want something to punch paper with maybe go with something a little less punishing to the shoulder than a "large caliber".

The last time I set a scope on my remington I had to quit when I got close and put it off for a few days, it got so bad that I was flinching on every shot. Maybe I'm a wuss, maybe I'm just more honest than most, either way my arm hurt ;-)
