So 1911 has a legendary status in the semiauto world.
Which revolver has a legendary status?

Let's break it down to which SA revolver has legendary status?
Which DA revolver has legendary status?

Well, In my opinion:

1911 - would be the WW2 USGI model

SA Revolver - Colt Peacemaker

DA revolver - S&W 29 (Dirty Harry)

But M29 Dirty Harry is just a movie legend. There gotta be more realistic legendary DA revolver!

The model 29 was well known by shooting enthusiasts long before Dirty Harry made it famous with people who know nothing about guns. It, the SAA, and the Python get my vote.

The gun of all tv cops

The m60 has been in more movies then the m29.
I grew up watching cops shows and they almost always had a snub nose.
So my vote goes for the J frame

Single action has to be the Colt Single Action Army .45. Double action has to be the S&W 29 .44 Mag. Both probably have as much recognition around the world as they do in the U.S. As mentioned, the Smith 29 was "recognized" and revered well before it became a movie icon of its own....Elmer Keith saw to that. All that said, I'd rather have a Ruger 50th Anniversary .44 Mag 6.5" barrel instead of either of the "legendary" guns. :D

What the other posters said, The Registered Magnum, but I would broaden it a bit and say all N Frame Smith and Wesson revolvers.

The Colt Model P Single Action Army is known all over the world but as an actual using handgun, it leaves a lot to be desired.

S&W Model 10

The Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38 SPC (Military & Police) has basically been the most widely used and copied revolver of all time. It is also basically the foundation upon which Smith & Wesson has built all other revolvers.

The Model 10 put S&W at the top as far as sales went. The model 10 also beat out Colt from all the military contracts.

If the 1911 is the king of autos, it would be hard to argue against the model 10 considering it's popularity.

The model 10 in its different variations have been in production for about 110 years, and continue to this day.

which SA revolver has legendary status?
The Peacemaker would seem the obvious choice, though some Colt history buffs might argue for the Model 1851.
Which DA revolver has legendary status?
Though not as pretty as a Smith or Colt, the British Webley and it’s derivatives and forebears, has certainly seen a lot of history.

Based on notoriety? For SA it would have to be the Colt Walker. The legend seems to live on to this day over how powerful a gun it was. For DA there's no doubt that the cartridge of notoriety is the .44Magnum. As for which gun that uses it gets the nod I'd suggest that the S&W 29 would be it due to the Dirty Harry connection. After all there were a lot more S&W 29's sold over the years than Colt Anaconda which chambered the round.

Based on guns produced and duration of production the Colt SAA Peacemaker would be top dog SA for sure. It continued to be made in big numbers for a lot of years even after double action revolvers and semi autos had stolen the limelight. For double action you can't really argue with the Model 10 at who knows how many million produced and with a better than 100 year production record. And if you add on the other K frame .38's in various barrel lengths as being demonstrably the same gun other than that one factor it would seem to be a slam dunk.

Although if we're going to think of the K frames as a FAMILY of guns that are all the same at the core than by rights the various K frame .357's sort of need to be added in as well. At that point I doubt there would be any argument at all that the K frame family steals the show hands down based on production and market acceptance and public recognition.

I can think of a lot of folks who would disagree with that.
