Which rifle(s) have the best accuracy/moa for the money (modded/unmodded)?

Savage is excellent, and inexpensive, so that satisfies your criteria. I've got a bolt .22 with the heavy barrel and globe sights, and it's fantastic. I like the AccuTrigger, too.

Ammunition makes a difference; I get the best results with target ammo (subsonic); the high-velocity stuff flies around a bit.

So... I'm hearing Savage so far...

However... Which Savage are you guys talking about?

Mine is a model 12. A single digit number means short action. A triple digit number is a long action. Since mine ends in a 2 it's a single shot. Though all of them shoot the same. If you want to spend the money they even make a factory F-class rifle.

Savage is definitly the way to go. Mine is a 12fv .223 it shoots great but with all my stuff I put on it and with the heavy barrel it tips the scales at ten pounds.:D But ALL savages shoot great I'd take a savage over most any brand any day. With only a few exeptions to some previous winchesters and marlins.

Eek! $600+!

Damn being a college student and not having a job...

Lol should I just start out with a mosin nagant?

I have a Remington SPS Tactical in 308 that has printed a few 100 yard groups measuring around .3 MOA, also a few 300 yard groups that were a tad over an inch, and busted a few clay pigeons at 600 yards...that's pretty accurate for a $580 rifle...no mods.

Damnit, with a couple more hundred bucks I could get an AR-15...

I guess I won't be able to get one (a Savage) now, but at least I have to decide on one. Then I can start saving up for it.

EDIT: Hmm, when you guys repeat the word, "savage" over and over again in this thread, you're referring to both the centerfire rifles and the rimfire rifles, correct? Are their rimfires just as good (in terms of accuracy) for the money? How about, dare I say (and maybe blaspheme here), a semi-auto rimfire? Their Model 64F is $152 MSRP!
Or how about their bolt-action Mark II F for $249 MSRP?

... because as cheap as a bastard as I am right now, I don't think I could afford any of their centerfires (looking at $MSRP on savage arms) yet.

Any of the Savage's with a heavy barrel ---- I've owned 4 of them , 2 in .223 and 2 in .308.
ALL OF THEM shot less then a inch at 100yds with mil. surplus and around 1/2" with my handloads !!!!

EDIT --- for a .22RF , I got a Marlin 880SQ that shoots 1 MOA out to 200 yards !!!!

Stevens 200

What you are looking for is a Stevens 200. It is basically a Savage without the accutrigger. They are very accurate right out of the box and can be purchased new for less than $300 if you shop around a little. 223 Remington would be a good chambering for it as there is a lot of very good factory cartridges offerings in 223 at a lower cost than most.

look for a good deal

a used heavy barreled Savage. I have found plenty of them. All of mine, 9 of them and counting, are pretty much the same gun. They are all model 12s with heavy varmint/target ss fluted barrels and laminated wood stocks. I also have a 9317 BTVSS in 17 HMR. My latest is a an F-class in 6mmBR. Look around on-line and in your local gunshops for a model 12 BVSS or VLP. Since you are a college student and money is tight I would recomend getting it in 223 or 204 ruger. The 223 is very accurate in the right rifle and the Savage definitely is the right rifle. The 204 is also exceptionally accurate though a little pricier, but not much.

I'll vouch for savage bolt action rimfires, not sure about the semi's. My other savage is a .50 cal muzzleloader that avg's 3/4" at 100 yds, and has shot 3/8" groups at 100 yds more than once.

Local talk around me is that the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard is the most accurate out of the box rifle on the market, for the money. I don't like Savages. They feel cheap to me. The Remington 700 is pretty damn good, and it's a quality gun. Pay a little more for quality, and that will equal happiness in the long run.

STAY FAR FAR away from the el cheapo lines (stevens, and Remington 710/770 lines. You get what you pay for, and those are junk. If you can't afford a good rifle (M700, M77 etc), save more money.

Well, hmm... I understand that "you get what you pay for,"...

But is it still a bad idea to get a Savage for $99 (semi-auto 64) at walmart first, baby it for [quite] a while (and learn how to properly take care of a gun, as it would be my first rifle), then keep it to use for a spare, bang-it-around gun when I have saved up enough money (~$600-800) to buy an actually good Savage (such as the 16FSS?)?

$140.00 Marlin 60, out of the box, with a $9.99 tasco scope @ 25 yards with Remington Thunderbolt will do this:

Yeah, but I can do that with a 10/22, too, if I just spend another 500 bucks on it!:D

Depends entirely on what you're talking about.

.22 semiauto, for an inexpensive rifle, I don't think you can beat the Marlin 60.

A bolt-action centerfire? Weatherby/Howa guns are really hard to beat for the prices they cost (at least the base models). Then again, the even cheaper recently-introduced Mossberg and Marlin offerings are supposed to be quite accurate, also.

Bolt-action rimfires? CZ's are beautiful, AND accurate, AND reasonably-priced.

Lever action centerfires? Marlins, with the right ammo, are a lot more accurate than people realize, and available cheap.

My yugo M48 was $150 and it shoots pretty darn well. My 1903a3 cost $325 and it hits anything you point her at. Both use Iron sites and deadly accurate out to 100 yards with a normal standing free hand shooting position. MOA and all that jazz, I have no clue.

What caliber??? I mean, there are a lot of variables involved here.

For a .22LR bolt action... I'd put the Remington Model Five in the same league as a CZ 452 American, for about $100 less... mine easily will put 5 shots inside a dime @ 50 yards... (if I do my part).

Centerfire rifles, are a completely different critter... as well as a plethora of calibers to choose from... some more accurate than others...

Modified rifles?? Ugh... uhhmmm... well, that would really depend on your wallet, and how much you want to pour into the rifle...

Marlin's new bolt gun is the best value on the planet. I'd go .308 if I could only have one rifle.
