Results of project
The temperature got up to 45 today. Overcast and 10 to 15 MPH wind. All in all not the best day for shooting but I went anyway. Re-seated some .223 I had FL resized for one of my other rifles. Somewhat skeptical as I had to seat the 55 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips very deep in the case (2.235" OAL)to get the rounds in the magazine...quite a bit of freebore in this upper which I suppose is due to the wide variety of bullets & military surplus out there. Had a couple of failures to feed a round completely into battery which I suppose is common to this type of rifle...otherwise there wouldn't be any such thing as a "forward assist" right? The riflle ran very well after that. Now for the amazing results down range. The worst group I shot went an inch. Several five shot groups were in the 1/2" to 3/4" range and often with three shots printing a cloverleaf. Did I just luck out and get a good one? Is this representative of the accuracy I can expect from other rifles fitted with heavy and or bull barrels that have been free floated? What kind of accuracy can I expect from a light barrel? Overall, I am extremely pleased with the way this project turned out. Think I'll build another one with either a 20" or a 24" bull barrel!
