I'd go for a Brockman's Working Rifle in .375 H&H. See here for details.
The rifle costs $2,895 without the scope. I'd spend another few hundred dollars on a really good scope (Swarovski, etc.), and fit it out with a few extras like Eric Ching's Safari sling, a butt ammo carrier, etc. That would probably run the price tag up to the $4,000 - $4,500 range.
The balance of the $6,000 I'd spend on a DSA FAL, thank you very much!

I would buy a Remington 700P LTR in .308, have the trigger replaced with a Timney and set at 1.75lbs, add a Leupold Long Range or Nikon Tactical scope w/ mil-dot reticle (flip a coin) w/ Leupold Mark 4 or Badger base & rings, add a Harris Bipod, a SKB two gun case, a tactical shooting mat and a decent spotting scope w/ tripod. Oh, and don't forget a case of Federal Match Grade .308 ammo and a box of premium long filler hand rolled Dominican cigars (Licenciado's?).

The barrett its good out to almost 2000 yds almost a mile away.And with a .50 it packs plenty of punch.

Damn, barret M82 costs $7000 minimum used. $1.00 round for ammo. Plus, how am I gonna use it for home defense? I think I am buying black Steyr Aug with 9mm kit may be.

Vector Arms has full-auto Belgium-made FN FALs for $6000...I have no previous experience with FALs. I have heard excellent things about them, mags are cheap, ammo is ok, and a full-auto .308 for only $6k sounds sweet.

Doc, unless you're a big fan of the Aug and like it's ergonomics, it really doesn't do anything other good 5.56 rifles don't do, an AR or HK in 5.56 is a cheaper, and I think better, alternative.

I'd go looking for clean, 80% or so, Winchesters. Maybe a 92 in .44-40 and/or a 95. Or, drag out some of the old pets and have them refinished and the stocks brought back to like-new. There's just not much new stuff out there that'll do more for me than what I've got...

Definately the Barrett M-82A1 and a boat-load of Raufoss MP AP, Incindary, RDX Explosive-tipped delayed-fragmentation ammo. I hear this round will even do my taxes.

Jack19 has the right idea, if you can find yourself one of the AI's buy it. In a recent issue of the shotgun news the editors did a report on the AI-AWSM .338 Lapua, and I quote "quite possibly the best damn sniper rifle on the planet" it what they had to say about it. As for me, I enjoy mine two or three times per month, however it isn't really that cost effective, I used to pay between $3.00 and $4.00 per round. Finding ammunition for it is almost as hard as finding the gun initially was. I have mine for several years now, and when I bought mine it was found after searching for about 9 months. The problem was, if I remember correctly, they weren't being sold to the general public when I purchased mine. I paid way more than what you can but it for now however. I've seen M82A1's for the same price, ughhh. Great weapon, extremely accurate (hense the name), very light in weight, durable, and provides a hell of a lot of damage from pretty far out. Oh and did you know that the .338 round at 1500 yards has the same velocity as a .44 magnum leaving the barrel? Even if you miss, the splash damage is... well you get the picture. We fire from my friend's deck down into the valley at targets mounted .25, .50, .75 of a mile away. His nearest nieghbors own several hundred acres and allow us to shoot at targets (which they also mount/change for us) for a small fee several miles south east of McMinnville, OR. It works out pretty well for us. The last time I went shooting at his ranch, we cooked off over 5,000 rounds of 7.62 variation thru most of his Kalishnikov collection. I will be heading out there for a day/night shoot as soon as weather permits. Hoo Yah.

I'd go ith this setup.I think it would serve me very well as a good, accurate, hard hitting long range shooter.I think it wouldbe a LONG time before I outgrew this setup.Only thing else I might do was get a custom barrel in place of the factory one, but it's unlikely it'd be nessecary with my skills for a LONG time, and I honestly dont know enough about custom barrels and barrel makers, or have the skill to jusify it.

I'm actually considering this for the future to try my hand at long range target shooting, and figure it could double as good, long range hunting and/or SHTF pecision rifle.

I couldn't conceive of spending that much on a rifle. This is simply because my budget has never allowed me to look that high. I am very happy with my SAKO's right now.
