Hey all,
Well I've decided I "need" ;) a new rifle. Now I currently own about four AR's (plus a couple stripped lowers), a couple Garands, and M1a blah blah blah. Now what I don't have is an AK or a FAL (I had a DSA StG58 Carbine that I installed Izzy furniture on. Like a dumbass I sold it). I've got it narrowed down to a....

Arsenal SAM7SF sidefolder AK

or a

DSA StG58 para carbine.

Both are somewhat comparably priced. Now I know with the AK, well, it's an AK and I know "everyone should have one", and with the FAL "Well it's an FAL and everyone should have one" . If I go with the FAL, I'll have the "advantage" of not having to buy ammo for a whole new caliber. This is a tough choice fellers. Which should it be, and why?

Thanks
Rich

Get the Battle Rifle!

I think the FAL is a better rifle. It's more powerful, more accurate and more versatile.

However, the AK does have the advantage of being lighter and is more compact. But since you have ARs, you have that niche covered.

Hmmm. The Right arm of Freedom vs. the symbol of communist/terrorist tyranny.

Both are very cool. I'd lean toward the .308, but you alrady have an M1A.

Tough choice, but the fact you can buy either means we're all still pretty free.

Funny how the ability to purchase an AK variant has become the bellweather of how much liberty is left in America.

How true.

You've already got your "battle rifles" covered, and your poodle-shooters too: so why not fill the gap in your collection and go for a ComBloc weapon, for variety's sake?

Search your feelings Luke, you already know the answer... get both

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could, but there's only enough "funds" for one. :(

Not to hijack your thread, but is there some reason that the G3 variants (like the U.S. made PTR-91) are not in the running? Around $700 brand new...

You've tried the whole FAL scene, have you considered the HK G3 side of life?

-MV (who shot a real G3 and loved it, but got a Garand because he's cheap)

Just not a PTR/G3 fan. They just don't feel right to me.

"Got a Garand because he's cheap"?! More like "got a Garand because he's smart." ;)

I say get the Arsenal. Like Preacherman said, you've got the battle rifle role pretty well covered. Get yourself a 16" AK, and you can shoot all day with a handy rifle for very little $ compared to your .308s. And if you get bored with it, you can always 'add on' to your heart's content.

Since you can get relatively inexpensive milsurp ammo in both .308 and 7.62x39, you can actually rationalze getting BOTH.
Actually x39 is getting harder to find lately. I've been shooting my x39 guns less and my x51 guns more.

Of course I have little reason to worry with about 7k of Silver Bear and Barnual squirrelled away.

Do you think that's just a temporary thing or do you think it's going to only get worse?

Thanks

The STG58 feels like a rifle. A shop in this area had a couple para carbines in stock (very rare), but his price was about $100 too much.

Effective guns cheap enough to be affordable by even the poor are a very good bellweather of how much liberty you have. If a right can only be exercised by the richest 1 percent of the population (machine guns, or due process at a criminal trial, for example) it isnt really a right anymore.

x39 is only rare in comparison to how easy it was to get for 7 cents a round a while back. I just got another 1000 rds of wolf for about 10 cents a round. There isnt a ton in stock anywhere, but regular shipments are still arriving.

Wow. Tough choice. You can't go wrong with either. I should know, as I have both. I have a ban-era Arsenal SA M7S (pinned muzzle brake and no bayonet lug), and a DSA SA58c para. I love them both. Here they are along with my PTR-91:

Nice. One question on the para. How comfortable is the folding stock when it comes to shooting?

Thanks

Much more comfortable than I had expected, actually. Mine has the cheek pad that attaches with velcro straps, and I'm sure it makes a big difference.

Of course there's always the "bargain" alternative and getting whichever model with the fixed stock (SAM7 carbine, or STG58 carbine).

Ak is cheap and cheap to shoot. Get them both!

Thats the first thing I am doing when I get out of here.

The Arsenal SAM7SF is far from cheap. It's definitely not an SAR1.

From a logical perspective, get the more expensive one. It will be easier to justify getting the cheaper one later. :)

True, but you can always do what I did. I bought a SAM7S, which is exactly the same as the SF except it has a rigid conventional buttstock instead of the side folder. I bought mine used but like new (literally -- not a scratch on it) from a local gun store for $395. I can always convert it to a folding stock later, if I want to and have the money. Right now, I'm pretty happy with it as is.
