So I'm going to be buying a rifle next week something in the M4 category. Just wondering what brand and caliber you guys would recommend. This is for fun and self defense.

M4...

Right now is a TOUGH time to buy an M4 - dealers are cleaned out because of obamapanic. I have a friend who waited 7 months to get one in, and when he picked it up, a guy there in the store offered him $2000 for a $1200 rifle. I think it is a little crazy right now - you may spend a BUNCH!

Yeah, you'll probably buy "whatever they have left" because that'll be your only choice right now. Now here in a couple/few months, you'll have your choice again.

i say if you can get one, get one set up with a flat top, that will give you more options, a 16" barrel an optic ie eotech, buis, sling, i prefer the one points, good mags, ammo and a couple training courses under your belt too.

look at stag, bushmaster, slr -15 of you can afford them and you will be good to go. caliber wise i say stick with what is avaliable most of the time, well more so than the other odd calibers. get the .223/5.5.6

Man you guys must be living in a horrid place, I just saw AR's for under $900 yesterday and bought another half dozen Brownells mags for $20 each.
You can pay as much as you want but there are still some dealers out there with good stock or else we all have enough and aren't buying any:confused:

My local gun shop has over 20 right now used and new in stock which is about how many they tend to keep on hand. But there are other shops in the state that are sold out of them but only because they don't keep that many. I think a lot of people in VA already own ar-15's or they have no desire to own them.

Not being a smart a$$ or anything, but an M4 is the fully auto law enforcement version of the AR-15. I have an Armalite AR and it shoots great. Can go wrong with that or a Bushmaster. BTW, you won't regret getting an AR... you'll have as much fun with that as anything in your collection. Good luck to ya.

M-4 clone lower with a 6 position collapsible stock. By yourself an upper half complete with bolt and charging handle that shoots the 7.62 X 39 cartridge. Get yourself some reliable magazines and you have the best of two worlds. The great ergonomics of the M-4 and the bigger, more effective bullet of the 7.62 X 39 cartridge. Later on you can get an upper half with bolt, charging handle and magazines to shoot the .223/5.56 ammo if you like. That way you can have two good uppers to use with your one lower half.
